About the role

Department Overview

The OHSU Department of Surgery is comprised of nine integrated yet independent surgery divisions: Abdominal Organ Transplantation, Bariatric, Cardiothoracic, Gastrointestinal and General, Pediatric, Plastic and Reconstructive, Oncology, Trauma and Acute Care and Vascular Surgery. Our department is built on a culture of community and a history of innovative and interdisciplinary collaboration. Our faculty are dedicated to excellence in education, research, scholarship and clinical practice. We also house one of the largest general surgery residency programs in the country and offer surgery fellowships in all of our disciplines. OHSU as a teaching hospital is fully supported by each of our faculty and staff. In your role you will serve as the Director of Community Engagement and Education for the Department of Surgery. As a member of the Department of Surgery you will report to the Department Chair. You will also have a reporting line to the Provost Office and the Vice President of Health Equity.

Function/Duties of Position

In your role you will serve as the Director of Community Engagement and Education for the Department of Surgery. As a member of the Department of Surgery you will report to the Department Chair. You will also have a reporting line to the Provost Office and the Vice President of Health Equity as you will be expected to contribute in each of the following areas:

 

1. Administration/Service. Administrative and other duties may be assigned based on department needs and your areas of expertise and interest, including opportunities to participate in departmental management and to serve on institutional committees. Department committees include:

  • Department of Surgery DEI Council
  • Department of Surgery Education Executive Committee
  • Member of the Surgical Leadership Group
  • Act as liaison for the Department of Surgery to the Office of Health Equity for community outreach and engagement
  • Act as Department of Surgery liaison to the OHSU simulation center(s) in partnership with the Department of Surgery Associate Program Director for Simulation
  • Member of the OSHU Simulation Steering Committee
  • Member of the Health System Health Equity Advisory Committee
  • Work with Surgical Divisions to facilitate access to care and delivery of surgical services to underserved communities in the region. Help guide simulation services toward community engagement

2. Education. OHSU is a teaching facility, and you will be expected to teach students and residents in the research setting as well as through assigned lectures to be given during the course of the year. You will also be expected to participate in the following ways:

  • Assist with curriculum development geared toward mental health as it pertains to underserved communities
  • Contribute to the success of the University’s 30/30/30 goal
  • Expand Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging curriculum across the Department’s training programs
  • Partner with Simulation and Provost Office to advance Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging initiatives
  • Serve as a resource to simulation staff and faculty
  • Measure the effectiveness of DEI&B learning
  • Ensure the educational effectiveness of Simulation training across multiple programs including clinical quality and safety measures
  • Participate in resident interviews and recruiting process
  • Work with Vice Chairs of Research and DEI to support the STEMPrep program
  • Support faculty engagement in EQUITY, CURE, and Knight Scholarship Programs
  • Assist in faculty development and resident education specific to DEI&B
  • Serve as a resource for the simulation staff and faculty concerning community engagement and DEIB efforts.

3. Research. There are resources available for start-up research and on-going support via established processes and opportunities. Faculty interested in doing research may be eligible to apply for departmental research assistance and non-clinical time through the Director of Research.

  • Assist in the development of a research program that supports the institutional sponsorships supported by the Department of Surgery.
  • Help measure the effectiveness of our simulation based educational programs

Finally, this person will serve as a primary mentor for research residents in the educational laboratories of the Department of Surgery as well as have responsibilities for the education of all research residents.

Required Qualifications

  • The successful candidates will have a PhD or EdD in Medical Education or relevant discipline.
  • They will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills with a record of peer-reviewed publications in scho
