Engineering Manager, Data Persistence

As a Manager of Data Persistence Engineering, you’ll provide technical leadership to a team responsible for one of Ridgeline’s most foundational components of our platform architecture: our persistence layer. You will bring your experience managing internal platforms and the amazing engineers that support them. The engineering manager of the growing Data Persistence team will help shape and develop a roadmap in service of both Ridgeline’s business objectives and a fast paced product development organization.
As a leader at Ridgeline and one of our first 400 employees, you will also help preserve our culture and influence the trajectory of an ambitious tech startup. Our team aims to leave a legacy in an investment management industry primed for change.
Key Expectations
- Guide an evolving persistence architecture to meet our best in class durability, availability and recovery objectives.
- Partner with stakeholders from across the company to understand the Recovery Point (RPO) and Time (RTO) Objectives that will support future waves of customer growth.
- Build relationships with leadership across engineering in an effort to understand how Data Persistence can accelerate product development while never sacrificing our SLOs.
- Provide a constant focus on mitigating costs in an area that has a tangible impact on company profitability.
- Contribute business insight, design skills, and best practices to a team where design, strategy, and engineering collaborate closely
- Be involved in the entire software development process, from requirements and design reviews through the implementation of a new product, understanding agile development methodologies
- Hands-on responsibility with the codeline, contributing to the codebase on a regular basis
- Participate actively in the peer and code review process
- Help engineers develop new skills and advance their career through coaching
- Engage in performance conversations and help align business objectives and career goals
- Coach, mentor, and inspire teams of engineers that are responsible for delivering high performing, secure enterprise applications
- Think creatively, own problems, seek solutions, and communicate clearly along the way
- Contribute to a collaborative environment deeply rooted in learning, teaching, and transparency
- Build a diverse team while fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment
Desired Skills and Experience
- 5+ years in a hands-on software engineering management position or similar function, with a history of architecting and designing new products and technologies in the cloud
- Professional experience within an organization responsible for managing customer databases in an industry bound by compliance controls.
- 2+ years experience supporting relational databases hosted on AWS, preferably Aurora RDS
- Working knowledge of SQL or an equivalent database query language
- Ability to deliver in a fast-paced environment with the desire to forge a path when requirements may be dynamic and evolving
- Clear and crisp communicator, with the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues at all levels
- A degree in Computer Science, Information Science, or a related discipline
- Ability to lead and influence both with and without authority
- Strong knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and architectural patterns
- Ability to focus on short-term deliverables while maintaining a big-picture perspective
- An aptitude for problem-solving
- Serious interest in having fun at work
Bonus
- Expertise in PostgreSQL or similar open source relational database management system
- A history of partnership with Security and/or Compliance teams within enterprise software companies.
- Hands on experience working with Terraform or other infrastructure as code tools to manage AWS resources.
- Experience with investment management applications
