Position Overview and Responsibilities:
This Environmental Specialist I position is part of the Florida Geological Survey’s Geologic Sample Acquisition and Management section. The position is a primarily geologic collections specialist for the FGS Geological Sample Collections Facility (repository) and occasional field assistant. These duties will include all aspects of working with geologic samples from adding new samples to the collection and entering the data into the FGS’s online GEODES database to preparing and cataloging samples, pulling samples for scientists, returning samples to the shelves, performing QA on the collections themselves and in the database. You will assist the Collections Curator in all matters concerning the collections and facility.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledgeable about geologic samples and proper handling and processing thereof.
Skilled in organizing work details and prioritizing workload.
Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
Ability to learn to use FGS databases and DEP web-based software systems.
Ability to lift, handle and mix bulk materials of at least 100 pounds, including boxed core samples.
Ability to use lab and shop equipment and materials.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to maintain a valid driver license.
Ability to tow a trailer or learn to tow.
Ability to operate a forklift.
Minimum Qualifications:
- At least one year of verifiable related experience in processing, preparing, and archiving geologic samples including but not limited to well cuttings and cores collected with a variety of methods. Experience with database entry, specifically the FGS GEODEs borehole sample database.
- Valid Driver’s License
Position of Special Trust Requirement:
This position is designated as a Position of Special Trust in accordance with DEP-422 (Positions of Special Trust or Responsibility). Any applicant being considered for employment must successfully complete a Level 2 State and National criminal history check as a condition of employment before beginning employment, and also be screened in accordance with the requirements of Chapter 435, F.S. No applicant may begin employment until the background screening results are received, reviewed for any disqualifying offenses, and approved by the Agency.
Pay:
This position is hiring at $43,230 per year
