Overview

The Manager of Engineering & Project Management will provide strategic leadership and oversight to a multidisciplinary team of mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and project managers. This role reports to the Vice President of Power Systems and is responsible for delivering Caterpillar dealer solutions for electric power and industrial engine products, ensuring successful execution of projects in critical infrastructure environments such as data centers, hospitals, and other emergency standby applications. Additionally, this position will oversee engineering and project management efforts for the Packaging division, which manufactures engine-generator controls, enclosures, fuel tanks, and related components. Direct reports include engineering supervisors and project managers. (Approx. overall staff size of 15-20 engineers and project managers.)

Basic Duties

Team Leadership & Development

  • Provide vision, direction, and day-to-day leadership for the engineering and project management teams.
  • Recruit, mentor, and develop staff to build a high-performing, collaborative, and results-oriented organization.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, safety, and innovation.

Project Management & Execution

  • Oversee all aspects of project planning, execution, and closure for critical infrastructure and packaging projects.
  • Establish project timelines, budgets, and resource allocation, ensuring adherence to scope and quality standards.
  • Utilize risk management best practices and problem-solving techniques to maintain project schedules and cost targets.

Technical Oversight & Quality Assurance

  • Guide mechanical and electrical engineering efforts to ensure compliance with industry standards, codes, and regulations.
  • Lead technical reviews and design evaluations, ensuring products meet performance, safety, and reliability criteria.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., manufacturing, procurement, quality, sales) to align engineering deliverables with business needs.

Stakeholder & Customer Engagement

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for internal and external stakeholders, including Caterpillar dealers, end customers, suppliers, and other partners.
  • Communicate project status, technical requirements, and engineering updates effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships, managing expectations and ensuring customer satisfaction.

Strategic Planning & Continuous Improvement

  • Contribute to long-term strategic planning, identifying emerging technologies and market trends relevant to electric power and industrial engine products.
  • Develop and implement processes to enhance engineering productivity, project delivery, and product quality.
  • Champion best practices in project management methodology, engineering design, and operational efficiencies.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field; advanced degree (MBA, MS) is preferred.
    • Proven experience (7+ years) in engineering and project management roles, including at least 3 years in a leadership capacity.
    • Demonstrated experience managing complex projects in manufacturing, construction or critical infrastructure environments (e.g., data centers, hospitals) is highly desirable.
    • Must possess a valid driver’s license with clean driving record. This includes no more than 2 minor violations within the past 3 years and no major violations within the past 5 years (Motor Vehicle Report will be performed on final candidate).

Technical & Managerial Skills

    • Solid understanding of mechanical and electrical systems, including power generation and industrial engine applications. Caterpillar electric power product knowledge a plus.
    • Proficiency with project management tools and methodologies.
    • Experience with UL, NFPA, CSA, and other regulatory agencies.
    • Strong organizational, budgeting, and planning capabilities, with a track record of delivering results on time and within budget.
    • Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
