Job Overview
The Fire Safety Deputy Director operates and monitors the Fire Alarm Panel located in the lobby of the Herald Square store.
What You Will Do
- Operate and monitor the Fire Alarm Panel located in the Herald Square store lobby.
- Respond to fire alarm activations by:
- Acknowledging the alarm.
- Notifying the Emergency Response Team via the radio paging system.
- Making announcements to affected areas of the building.
- Contacting the outside monitoring company to confirm FDNY is en route.
- Briefing FDNY on alarm conditions upon arrival.
- Providing ongoing updates and, if necessary, making additional announcements to other floors.
- Maintain working knowledge of the building layout to support effective emergency response.
- Handle incoming calls related to alarm activations.
- Partner with the outside contractor responsible for annual system testing.
- Maintain and oversee more than 3,000 fire alarm devices in the building.
- Notify the Emergency Response Team of non-fire life safety situations.
- Conduct periodic inspections of selling floors and tower floors to verify fire extinguishers are in place and fire exits are clear.
- Perform non-fire life safety duties, including:
- Inspecting packages and announcing guests to the 12th and 13th floors.
- Checking IDs to prevent unauthorized access to tower floors.
- Support a safe and secure business environment at all times.
- Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships, and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities.
- In addition to the essential duties mentioned above, other duties may be assigned.
Skills You Will Need
Fire Safety & Emergency Response Expertise – Knowledge of fire alarm systems, life safety protocols, and FDNY procedures to effectively manage emergencies.
Situational Awareness & Problem-Solving – Ability to quickly assess and respond to fire alarms, safety risks, and non-fire emergencies with sound judgment.
Communication & Interpersonal Skills – Strong verbal communication skills to deliver clear announcements, relay information to FDNY and internal teams, and interact professionally with employees, contractors, and visitors.
Calm Under Pressure – Ability to remain composed, decisive, and effective in stressful or potentially hostile situations.
Technical Proficiency – Familiarity with operating fire alarm panels, monitoring systems, and maintaining large-scale fire safety equipment (3,000+ devices).
Collaboration & Teamwork – Skilled at working with Emergency Response Teams, store staff, contractors, and external agencies to ensure coordinated safety efforts.
Attention to Detail – Diligence in monitoring systems, inspecting equipment, and ensuring compliance with fire safety and security protocols.
Adaptability & Resourcefulness – Self-starter who can work independently, prioritize effectively, and adapt to shifting demands and emergencies.
Security & Access Control Awareness – Ability to enforce building access policies, inspect packages, and maintain a safe business environment.
Who You Are
- Candidates with a High School diploma or equivalent are encouraged to apply.
- Able to complete a 40-hour training course and written exam, and pass both the written and on-site certification exams administered by the FDNY.
- This position requires heavy lifting, constant moving, remaining in a stationary position, and reaching with arms and hands. Involves remaining in a stationary position for at least two consecutive hours, lifting at least 30 lbs. stooping, kneeling, crouching, and climbing ladders. May involve reaching above eye level. Requires close vision, color vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
- Able to work a flexible schedule, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays, based on department and company needs.
