Job Title: Preventative Maintenance Technician

Reports To: Maintenance Supervisor

Position Summary:
The Preventative Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing routine mechanical maintenance and repair on various campus equipment, focusing on pumps, motors, and dining services machinery. This position plays a critical role in supporting Calvin University’s sustainability and budget goals by enhancing the longevity and energy efficiency of campus equipment, reducing waste, and optimizing repair costs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Mechanical Maintenance & Repair:
    • Perform preventative maintenance tasks on campus equipment, including pumps, motors, and dining services equipment, to extend their operational life and reduce energy consumption.
    • Grease bearings, replace filters, and conduct regular inspections to avoid unplanned breakdowns and ensure optimal equipment performance.
    • Troubleshoot and repair minor mechanical issues, reducing the need for expensive emergency repairs and replacements.
  • Dining Services Equipment Support:
    • Collaborate with dining services staff to maintain and repair kitchen equipment, helping reduce energy usage and extend the equipment’s life cycle.
    • Perform preventative maintenance on ovens, fryers, dishwashers, and other food service machinery, optimizing energy efficiency and reducing waste associated with equipment replacement.
    • Respond promptly to equipment issues, minimizing downtime and helping to avoid the higher energy and resource costs associated with inefficient equipment operation.
  • Sustainability & Budget Impact:
    • Support Calvin University’s sustainability efforts by ensuring that all machinery operates at peak efficiency, thereby reducing unnecessary energy consumption and waste.
    • Conduct regular maintenance and part replacements, reducing costly, unplanned repairs, lowering overall repair expenses, and extending equipment lifespan.
    • Collaborate with facilities management to identify and implement best practices in energy conservation and preventative maintenance to align with the university's sustainability and budgetary goals.
  • Documentation & Record Keeping:
    • Document all maintenance and repairs in the work order management system to monitor efficiency and sustainability impact over time.
    • Keep accurate records of inspections, part replacements, and maintenance activities to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and to track budgetary and environmental benefits.
  • Safety & Compliance:
    • Follow safety protocols, including the use of proper personal protective equipment (PPE), to minimize workplace incidents and reduce resource strain on emergency maintenance.
    • Adhere to Calvin University’s sustainability and safety guidelines in all maintenance activities, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable campus environment.
  • Collaboration:
    • Work closely with the Facilities Management team, dining services staff, and other departments to coordinate maintenance schedules and address equipment needs.
    • Support other maintenance and repair projects as needed, promoting teamwork and resource-sharing within the facilities team.

Qualifications:

  • Education & Experience:
    • High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational training or certification in mechanical maintenance is preferred.
    • Minimum of 8 years of experience in mechanical maintenance or a related field, with a focus on pumps, motors, or food service equipment.
  • Skills & Abilities:
    • Proficiency in mechanical troubleshooting and repair techniques.
    • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to sustainability and safety.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing time effectively.
    • Familiarity with basic computer skills for documentation in maintenance software.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work in confined spaces, and perform tasks that require standing, bending, or climbing.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily indoor work environment, with some tasks performed in mechanical rooms, kitchens, and other campus facilities. Occasional exposure to high heat, noise, and other conditions typical to maintenance settings.
