The Florida Department of Health (DOH) is responsible for the health and safety of all citizens and visitors to the state. As a public health agency, the Florida Department of Health must monitor the health status of Floridians, diagnose, and investigate health problems, and mobilize local communities to address health-related issues. The Florida Department of Health develops policies and plans that support health goals, enforce laws and regulations that protect the health of all residents and visitors, and link people to needed health care services. The Florida Department of Health also provides specialized assistance to pregnant women, infants, and children with special health care needs, regulates health care practitioners, and provides medical disability determinations.
Public Health Nutritionist (PHN)
The Public Health Nutritionist is responsible for providing general nutrition services with Health Promotion and Education as required. This position is also responsible for the coordination and implementation of nutrition policies and programs within the Florida Department of Health.
A valid and current Florida License to practice dietetics and nutrition is required for this position.
Responsibilities include:
- Conduct Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME), Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) and Blood Pressure Management (BP for Me) classes in the community.
- Plans, develops, and coordinates activities that prevent, control, and reduce chronic disease.
- Identify nutrition and diabetes awareness and prevention programs to provide interventions to treat and reduce obesity and co-morbidities.
- Provide licensed nutrition services as needed for class participants in our programs.
- Through outreach to medical providers, community partners, and organizations- will promote Health Literacy, Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME), Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), Blood Pressure Management (BP for Me), and Get into Fitness Today (GIFT)
