JOB TITLE:
Makerspace Assistant
JOB PURPOSE:
The Makerspace Assistant is expected to be well-versed in 3D printing, modeling software, electronic teaching kits, circuitry, and robotics. The Makerspace Assistant will work to maintain and repair makerspace equipment and help deploy policies and procedures for Makerspace access and usage, departmental programs, and safety procedures. Under the direction of the Makerspace Coordinator, the Makerspace Assistant with provide a variety of assistance to faculty, students, and community members. In the absence of the Makerspace Coordinator, the position will be responsible for operation of the lab.
Training in all areas will be provided, but ideal candidates will have experience in: 3D printing, modeling, scanning, robotics, electronics, coding, and STEAM lesson plan development. The position requires a highly motivated, energetic candidate with attention to detail.
About the University of Wyoming Innovation Network:
The University of Wyoming Innovation Network (UWIN) is a collaborative network of campus makerspaces that provides students, faculty, and staff with access to cutting-edge tools, training, and creative technologies. UWIN includes three distinct makerspaces, each with its own specialized focus:
1. Coe Student Innovation Center (Coe Library)
As the flagship makerspace, the Coe Student Innovation Center offers the broadest range of entry-level and advanced tools. Patrons can explore 3D printing, laser cutting, sewing, embroidery, stained glass, vinyl cutting, robotics, large-format printing, sticker creation, virtual reality (VR), and more. This space serves as the primary introduction to maker technologies on campus and is designed to support all disciplines and creative interests. It is also the home of our 4-H Makerspace Club where we host our youth after-school programs.
2. Make.IT (Information Technology Building)
Make.IT specializes in digital fabrication and design, with an emphasis on supporting student prototyping and product development. In addition to 3D printing and large-format laser cutting, the space features over-sized vinyl decal production, a large heat press, sticker printers, and a high-end AR/VR/XR/FD development workstation housed in a private gaming-style studio. Make.IT is conveniently located next to the residence halls and is a hub for rapid prototyping and student engagement.
3. SciDIY (Physical Sciences Building, basement near the Planetarium)
SciDIY focuses on immersive media and advanced electronics. It features an AR/VR/XR/FD development station and a corner CAVE integrated with a surround digital twin of the Planetarium for immersive experience development. This space also includes resin and FDM 3D printing, 3D scanning, circuit board milling, a full electronics workbench with soldering and oscilloscope capabilities, airbrushing, digital microscopes, 360° cameras, and ambisonic microphones. SciDIY is ideal for students and researchers working at the intersection of art, science, and emerging technology.
Together, these spaces create a powerful ecosystem that supports hands-on learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and innovation across the UW campus.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Job Duties: University of Wyoming Innovation Network (UWIN) is seeking enthusiastic, creative individuals to help run our makerspace lab and support day-to-day UWIN operations.
Specifically, the Makerspace Assistant is expected to:
- Demonstrate creative problem-solving instincts and ability to quickly learn and utilize non-traditional tools. Graphic (Photoshop, Illustrator) and digital design software experience a plus.
- Remain positive, enthusiastic, flexible, and upbeat in the face of challenges.
- Have an interest in or experience with makerspace hardware, software, and fabrication.
- Monitor and maintain the UWIN hardware and software for optimal performance. This will require learning about the technology, performing troubleshooting, and working with the Makerspace Coordinator to resolve issues.
