GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB:

The Manager of Specialty Pharmacy provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for specialty pharmacy services, including operations, medication access and affordability, accreditation, and business development. The role supports pharmacists, technicians, and residents and serves as a key member of the Pharmacy Leadership Team. This position requires a strong understanding of drug pricing, reimbursement, and the specialty pharmacy market. Patients range from pediatric to adult across multiple specialties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to hospital policies and ethical guidelines.
  • Coordinate and resolve day-to-day issues impacting specialty pharmacy operations.
  • Conduct audits and shadowing to ensure compliance with pharmacy guidelines.
  • Identify staff training needs and oversee education and competency assessments.
  • Collaborate with providers to implement disease-specific protocols.
  • Monitor productivity and quality metrics; recommend improvements.
  • Act as liaison between specialty pharmacy and clinical teams.
  • Support prior authorizations with additional clinical data as needed.
  • Prepare for and maintain accreditation (URAC) and REMS compliance.
  • Serve as preceptor for pharmacy students and residents.
  • Ensure specialty pharmacy is fully integrated with broader clinical services.
  • Promote specialty services to increase market share.
  • Respond to communications and perform other duties as assigned.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

I. Human Resources

  • Supervise and support staff across specialty pharmacy operations.
  • Participate in hiring, orientation, performance evaluations, and training.
  • Lead team meetings and address performance issues proactively.
  • Manage time-off requests and maintain productivity records.
  • Promote a positive work culture through transparent communication.
  • Measure staff satisfaction and implement improvements.
  • Precept students and residents.

II. Specialty Pharmacy Services

  • Optimize workflows and identify areas for improvement.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators.
  • Maintain staff training modules and ensure service excellence.
  • Ensure legal and regulatory compliance.
  • Oversee facility maintenance and cleanliness.
  • Develop marketing materials for patients and stakeholders.

III. Management of Medication Access and Affordability Services

  • Expand prior authorization services and refine access workflows.
  • Establish and track KPIs to monitor service delivery.
  • Collaborate with clinics and departments to maintain satisfaction.
  • Ensure accurate documentation and timely service recovery.
  • Partner with Fiscal on billing, denials, and reimbursement issues.

IV. Specialty Pharmacy Accreditation

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable accreditation standards.
  • Lead preparation and documentation for on-site reviews.
  • Educate staff on accreditation requirements.
  • Maintain records demonstrating compliance.

V. Manufacturer and Payer Contracting

  • Secure access to limited distribution drugs.
  • Negotiate payer and PBM contracts.
  • Analyze reimbursement terms and support contract execution.
  • Maintain vendor relationships and evaluate service opportunities.

VI. Budgeting and Finance

  • Monitor financial performance and generate profitability reports.
  • Contribute to budget development and variance reporting.
  • Support business planning and cost-containment strategies.
  • Coordinate rebilling services.

VII. Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Administer performance management and competency assessments.
  • Apply hospital policies and manage human resource needs.
  • Guide staff problem-solving and day-to-day decision-making.
  • Monitor productivity, time-off, and staff morale.
  • Foster a healthy team culture through open communication.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • B.S. or PharmD from an accredited College of Pharmacy
  • Completion of ASHP-accredited PGY1 & PGY2 residency or 3+ years specialty pharmacy experience

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Active Pharmacy License in the State of Texas
  • Certified Specialty Pharmacist (CSP)
