Job Description

The Sr. Materials Scientist will utilize materials and compliance expertise in working with R&D teams to help ensure product safety and design the best Sleep & Respiratory Care (S&RC) products for our customers.

Your role:

  • Scouting and selection of new polymer materials & processing/finishing technologies which make new designs and functions in Philips S&RC products possible.
  • Contribute to long term competence development in polymer materials & processing.
  • Review requirements and scrutinize for testability. 
  • Communicate and coordinate testing with internal and external test labs. 
  • Execute test procedures both personally and using test technicians. 
  • Perform materials assessments and testing needed for product development and design changes. 
  • Prioritize project tasks and provide weekly project status reports. 
  • Assess material failures and coordinate corrective actions with project teams. 
  • Review product requirements with development teams to ensure that they are complete and testable. 
  • Coordinate Formal Technical Reviews with cross functional group to plan and execute strategies. 
  • Plan and execute long-term accelerated aging studies to determine product material stability
  • Interact with Technical Writers to ensure product labeling complies with executed test procedures. 
  • Learn from and adhere to internal quality manual (Quality System Procedures, Work Instructions, Forms). 
  • Reporting to the Group Leader, you will collaborate cross-functionally across Core R&D/AD and greater Sleep & Respiratory Care teams, in execution of projects and processes.
  • This Hybrid, Pittsburgh, PA based role may require travel up to 10%.

You're the right fit if:

  • You have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in Materials Science, with a focus in product/ process development and testing in relation to polymer materials.
  • You have proven experience in functional materials and integration of materials in a medical device setting.
  • You’re able to collaborate with other (technical) disciplines, external partners, and companies.
  • You have strong root cause analysis experience and the ability to perform failure mode investigations to support CAPA process.
  • You have a solid understanding of ISO 10993 Standards for materials analysis and risk assessments, with knowledge of FDA, EU MDR and global medical device regulations, requirements, and standards preferred. 
  • You have detailed experience analyzing chemical and physical properties of materials, including polymer composites, for regulatory submissions.
  • Experience using test instrumentation and equipment in and out of a Lab environment. 
  • You have a minimum of a Ph.D. (Required) in Materials Science, Chemistry, Bioengineering, Polymer Science, or similar disciplines. 
  • You must be able to successfully perform the following minimum Physical, Cognitive and Environmental job requirements with or without accommodation for this position
  • US work authorization is a precondition of employment. The company will not consider candidates who require sponsorship for a work-authorized visa, now or in the future.
  • Company relocation benefits will not be provided for this position.  For this position, you must reside in or within commuting distance to Pittsburgh, PA.
