Job Description

NBC News is looking for an experienced and dynamic producer to join its National Security, Law Enforcement, and Investigative unit. This person will work with NBC’s senior legal correspondents and help them cover a range of topics, including the Supreme Court, the Justice Department, high-profile criminal and civil cases, significant court rulings, and legal affairs. They will be expected to cover trials and court proceedings, develop sources with court officials, prosecutors, and lawyers, and be able to quickly retrieve, read, distill, and report court rulings and legal filings from PACER, Lexis, and other legal databases.  

The producer will be a highly organized self-starter who is always thinking and planning ahead and has a high metabolism for daily news while also looking at the bigger picture. Identifying trends in court rulings, the law, criminal justice, and the legal world at large is paramount to success in this role. The ideal candidate will be adept at producing for a range of shows, content types, and platforms including field producing, package producing, live television production, and more. 

The producer will be at ease managing all phases of reporting from ideation to execution. This includes in-depth reporting, interview selection, preparation, scripting, and editing. They will also be a strong reporter and writer who can produce original and enterprising work and write for broadcast or NBCNews.com when required.

Responsibilities:

  • Conceive, research, and pitch day-of-air segments, original reporting, and long-form enterprise series for NBC News’ broadcast and digital platforms.
  • Build and maintain sources within the courts, the Justice Department, and the legal community.
  • Maintain a timely understanding of current events and ongoing coverage in legal affairs, high-profile criminal court cases, the Supreme Court, etc.
  • Monitor and flag key daily legal news and plan lines of reporting for upcoming pieces while maintaining an editorial calendar tracking those targets.
  • Independently shoot, write, and produce live and taped stories and segments.
  • Regularly pitch, report, and write pieces for NBCNews.Com.
  • Collaborate with teams across platforms on distinct, original stories and lines of reporting.

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of relevant working experience.
  • At least five years of experience as a full-time producer at a major news organization.
  • Experience in producing stories, including researching, writing, and shooting.
  • Exceptionally strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to multitask on multiple stories across a broad range of topics.
  • Must be willing to travel as needed often under short notice.
  • Able and willing to work flexible hours under tight deadline pressure and flex for breaking news.
  • Must be willing to work in NYC.

  • Hybrid: This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of three days per week.
