Backend Engineer, Personalization

The Personalization team makes deciding what to play next easier and more enjoyable for every listener. From Blend to Discover Weekly, we’re behind some of Spotify’s most-loved features. We built them by understanding the world of music and podcasts better than anyone else. In Mixer, we develop and operate a platform powering Spotify’s programmatic playlists and listening experiences. We also optimize for business outcomes and give the creators community a way to achieve their goals, all while ensuring continuous improvement in listener satisfaction. 

What You'll Do

• Collaborate with key internal stakeholders to determine how to design backend systems and APIs to meet their scalable needs
• Architect, develop, and operate Java services deployed to hundreds of millions of users
• Improve Spotify’s music recommendations to accomplish business goals while maintaining and improving listener satisfaction.
• Be an independent technical contributor within an autonomous, cross-functional agile team
• Collaborate with other engineers, product owners, and designers to identify and solve challenging problems
• Work on what you want during regular hack days and bi-annual hack weeks

Who You Are

• You have experience working directly with stakeholders to understand, document and develop APIs and systems to meet their requirements, driving increased adoption and reducing reliance on custom one-off implementations
• You have experience writing distributed, high-volume services and know how to deploy and keep them running in production
• You have an interest in big data processing technologies
• You love working in an environment where you constantly experiment and iterate quickly
• You believe data is the most powerful tool for informed decision-making
• You have a deep understanding of system design, data structures, and algorithms
• You care about quality and you know what it means to ship high quality code
• You may have experience working on a platform team

Where You'll Be

• Location is flexible. You will join a team that spans Boston, New York and Remote employees, so you need to be based in Eastern Standard Time zone

The United States base range for this position is $122,716.00 - 175,308.00, plus equity. The benefits available for this position include health insurance, six month paid parental leave, 401(k) retirement plan, monthly meal allowance, 23 paid days off, 13 paid flexible holidays, paid sick leave. These ranges may be modified in the future.
