Northrop Grumman Space Systems is seeking a Staff Mission Vehicle Engineer to help lead mission events based out of Gilbert, Arizona.  

Mission Vehicle Engineers function as the technical mission lead for their mission specific spacecraft, reporting up to the Chief Engineer and Mission Program Manager. They lead a cross-disciplinary team and are responsible for technical execution of vehicle mission. Come join our team and help us keep pushing the boundaries of what is possible. 

Job Responsibilities: 

  • Lead program technical execution for mission events in accordance with Northrop Grumman Systems Engineering processes and best practices  

  • Be self-directed while leveraging your technical and leadership skills for on-orbit-test, and operations throughout all planning, execution, and debrief phases

  • Function as the primary technical interface for customers, program management, product line engineering leadership, mission assurance, subsystem engineering, and payload engineering teams  

  • Providing space vehicle expertise to ensure spacecraft/payload system health, anomaly troubleshooting, and anomaly-resolution

  • Providing on-console operational support and aiding in the investigation and diagnosis of unexpected system signatures

  • Recognize and mitigate space-segment technical issues and risks. Support mission specific engineering review boards, change control boards, and risk management reviews 

  • Lead a team through major program milestone and readiness reviews 

  • Develop, document and utilize mission level analyses and tools for mission success

  • Directly support the On-orbit operations campaign for your designated mission at the Mission/Factory Operations Center 

  • Support other activities, including architecture studies, mission support, and other traditional Systems Engineering functions 

  • Aid process improvement initiatives, and incorporate lessons learned to continue to strengthen the product

  • Lead by example and be willing to mentor, coach, train, guide, direct and advise junior staff 

Basic Qualifications: 

  • BS in Engineering, Physics, or related STEM discipline and 12+ years of engineering experience OR MS degree and 10+ years of engineering experience

  • Have a strong background in systems engineering to include vehicle operations, spacecraft components/hardware, hardware/software integration, test planning & execution, and operational support 

  • Knowledge and experience in satellite operations engineering disciplines to include attitude control, power management, thermal control, propulsion, command and data handling, flight and ground software, and anomaly determination and resolution

  • Ability to troubleshoot and correct problems in a dynamic environment

  • Prior experience in technical or project leadership positions 

  • Must have U.S. Citizenship with active TS/SCI Clearance at the time of application

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Advanced degree in engineering

  • Recognized systems engineering subject matter expert (SME) 

  • Experience with Mission Operations for spacecraft 

  • Experience with various technical tools such as MATLAB, STK, CORE, DOORS, or CAMEO

  • Experience in any of the following areas is also desired:  orbital mechanics, orbital debris modeling, spacecraft attitude control, power systems and modeling, avionics or digital electronics design, risk analysis, optics, communications, rocket propulsion, thermal engineering, or spacecraft integration and testing
