About the role

Primary Function

The entry level Risk Manager is responsible for identifying risks to the organization, ensuring patient, staff and visitor safety, providing advice and opinions related to threats to patient safety in an effort to protect the organization’s assets and resources.

The safety event Database Analyst element of the position creates responsibility for interpreting and analyzing patient safety data, developing and submitting reports, training staff on the use of the system, and generally maintaining the electronic patient safety reporting system database on a daily basis

A third significant function of the Risk Manager/Database Analyst is to act as the Professional Practice Evaluation Specialist (PPE Spec.) within the Provider Refinement Committee (PRC). This role is anticipated to utilize 10 – 16 hours of the work week, and involves maintaining all PRC files, training physician reviewers, assisting with the facilitation of referrals, tracking and communicating determinations and recommendations issued by the PRC, coordinating monthly meetings and developing the agenda, and assisting the Chair of the PRC as required.

Responsibilities: Risk Manager

  • Under the supervision of the Director, Risk Management, the Risk Manager’s primary role is to ultimately provide a safe hospital environment by identifying, mitigating and reducing risk for all individuals within the organization.
  • Promote and support the implementation of the Kent Hospital Risk Management Program.
  • With adequate training and experience, serve as a resource for all staff and affiliated providers on medico-legal concerns.
  • Investigate patient safety events reported through the electronic safety event reporting system.
  • Conduct clinical analysis with immediate and appropriate response to any serious occurrence/complaint representing actual or potential patient, visitor, and/or employee injury.
  • Assist the Director with analyzing allegations of professional liability and negligence made against the organization, and/or its providers and employees.
  • Review documentation associated with patient safety events, including medical records, security reports, video, etc.
  • Conduct interviews of employees, patients, families, physicians and others for details of patient safety events.
  • Document chronological summaries of events and researches processes to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Participate in risk reduction strategies with the Risk Management Team.
  • Perform oversight of product recalls, medical device failure tracking and medical device event reporting to the FDA.
  • Collaborate with the Safety Officer to assist with disaster management and preparedness from a risk perspective. Coordinate the activities of the bi-monthly Environment of Care Committee meeting.
  • With adequate training and experience, acts in the Professional Practice Evaluation Specialist role (PPE Spec.) within the Provider Refinement Committee (PRC), assisting with the facilitation of referrals, determinations and recommendations issued by the PRC.
  • Maintain PRC files, coordinate monthly PRC meetings and assist the PRC Chair as needed.

Responsibilities: Database Analyst

  • Perform daily patient safety event data analysis to identify trends and drive change through continuous process improvement.
  • Collaborate with Risk Management staff to coordinate Apparent Cause Analysis related to sentinel and significant patient safety events and near miss events.
  • Create detailed, yet user-friendly event trend reports.
  • Maintain the electronic reporting system databases as directed by the Department Director. These responsibilities include: setting up and editing accounts, adding locations and services, updating users’ roles and locations, running system diagnostics, editing basic system configurations, problem solving, trouble shooting and communication with RL Datix related to upgrades and changes to the system.
  • Facilitate training on the electronic reporting system for Kent and CNE employees who require access to the system.
