POSITION SPECIFICS
The Energy Science and Power Division of the Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State University is seeking a Power Systems Engineer to manage complex projects, contribute to strategic objectives, mentor staff, and develop relationships to seek funding from potential sponsors. The Energy Science and Power Systems Division at the Penn State Applied Research Lab performs critical research and development in the design, prototyping, and testing of energy and power systems for Naval applications. These include high-energy-density systems for underwater vehicle propulsion, as well as other applications with unique constraints (outer space, stationary underwater power, etc.).
You Will:
Be responsible for technical development and project team leadership for prototype power systems development (modeling, design, build, and testing) for underwater applications and/or other unique applications
Interface with internal management, program sponsors, and other stakeholders to communicate progress and technical challenges associated with existing programs
Develop plans and proposals for potential new programs
Additional responsibilities of a level 4 include:
Provide technical leadership for Power Systems Engineering programs
Independently manage multiple and/or large, complex engineering projects
Initiate new Power Systems Engineering project concepts and seek funding for new development work
This job can be filled at the Advanced Professional or Senior Professional level depending upon successful candidate’s competencies, education, and experience. Minimal requirements include a Bachelor’s degree in a science/engineering discipline and 5 years related experience. A Masters' degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or related discipline preferred.
Required Skills and Experience:
The candidate should have a strong technical background with experience in design and analysis of mechanical, fluid-flow, heat transfer, and combustion systems
Experience with testing of mechanical hardware, including test planning, test execution, and documentation
Must have excellent written and oral communication skills
The candidate must have a minimum of 3 years engineering experience including a track record of successful project / team leadership
Active security clearance
Preferred Skills and Experience:
Experience with material selection, structural design, gears, bearings, seals, pumping elements, heat exchangers, fluid delivery systems, and
