Our special needs school in Commack, which operates year-round (regular school year plus six (6) week summer program), is seeking a NYS licensed Physical Therapist.  This position is a three day a week position.

General Purpose of the Job

Responsible for the evaluation and treatment of those students who have been referred by CSE/CPSE/EI and physician script has been obtained and assigned by the Clinical Supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Evaluates students with orthopedic, neuro-physiological and/or developmental deficit, upon assignment by the Clinical Supervisor.
  2. Formulates treatment program based on data learned through the evaluation process.
  3. Handles the treatment of these students through the use of physical agents, appropriate exercise, stretching, joint mobilization, or other therapeutic techniques.
  4. Communicates therapeutic procedures to parents, teachers, and other staff members.
  5. Attends meetings with other staff members in order to convey and receive information concerning student care.
  6. Participates in in-services.
  7. Records student status, therapeutic interventions recommended, and progress noted through proper note writing.
  8. Consults with equipment technicians and other dealers.
  9. Measures and arrives at appropriate specifications for appliances prescribed by the staff physicians.
  10. Supervises students from affiliate colleges.
  11. Supervises limited permit clinicians and physical therapy assistants.
  12. Responsible for the review, discussion and counter-signing of P.T.A.'s re-evaluations, progress notes, and any other paperwork.
  13. To provide a safe, supervised nurturing environment to the students we serve.
  14. Supervision of clinics or participation on committees as assigned by the Director of Educational Services/designee or Clinical Supervisor.
  15. All other duties pertaining to this position as assigned by the Director of Educational Services/Principal, Clinical Supervisor or designee.
  16. May be required to visit the home of a students at any time, should the need arise. After receiving the permission of the Director of Educational Services/Principal or Clinical Supervisor, the therapist should make their own arrangements with the family.
  17. All required documentation and paperwork completed in a thorough and timely fashion.
  18. Training and in-servicing employees in work related functions.
  19. Provides support to all departmental staff.
  20. Responsible to ensure that updated and accurate prescriptions are maintained for each student on their current caseload.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervises PT Assistants, students and observational volunteers in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training/in-servicing employees in work related functions.

 

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor's degree or higher from a college or university accredited by APTA. NYS Physical Therapist license.  Two years "pediatric/rehabilitation" experience preferred.
