Job Title: Engineering Technician V - OMST Engineering and Maintenance (NWS 00766)
North Wind Services is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. Successful candidates will be employees of NWS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly-motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by NWS, the employee will take day-to-day direction from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by NWS.
The Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) division of the Engineering Directorate has an opening for an Engineering Technician V to provide technical support to the maintenance and engineering organizations for optics processing and metrology within the National Ignition Facility & Photon Sciences Directorate (NIF&PS). The successful candidate will ensure the reliable operation of optics processing machines and equipment in production environments while collaborating with engineering staff as necessary to understand requirements and provide feedback to solve engineering challenges.
This position will require some travel to vendor facilities within the continental US. The Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) division of the Engineering Directorate. NIF is a 24/7 operational facility and may occasionally require working overtime, shifts, and/or weekends to accomplish goals; some work may occur in radiological environments.
Essential Duties
- Perform electrical and electro-mechanical (preventative and reactive) maintenance by applying intermediate knowledge on standalone machines and equipment involving computer-based controls and instrumentation, Programmable Logic Controllers, several types of motion controllers, vision systems, laser diagnostics, vacuum and pressure controls, pumps, fluid level and flow controls, and temperature controls.
- Receive and process work orders and document activities through online work process applications.
- Coordinate maintenance activities around the demands of production and vendor delivery requirements to minimize adverse impact on production schedules.
- Periodically work alternate shifts and/or weekends and work in an “on call” status.
- Serve as LLNL’s representative at several optical vendor sites within the continental US to perform electrical maintenance (preventative and reactive) on LLNL-provided machines and equipment.
- Make independent repair decisions, deferring more complex issues to engineer or supervisor and coordinate quick turn-around and replacement part deliveries.
- Write, review, evaluate, and update maintenance procedures, document electrical circuits and components on existing machines and equipment.
- Adhere to work control documents to safely work on equipment which utilizes up to class 4 lasers and/or toxic chemicals.
- Interact with project leaders, experimentalists, engineers, technical supervisors, technicians, and designers.
- Perform all other duties assigned.
Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
-Journey-level experience or associate’s degree in electronics technology or equivalent combination of education and related technical experience.
- Intermediate understanding of machine control systems utilizing computer-based controls and PLC experience.
- Intermediate skills and experience in troubleshooting and repairing a wide variety of moderately complex machine control and instrumentation systems involving vacuum and pressure controls, pumps, fluid level and flow controls, temperature controls including cryogenics, vision systems / cameras, laser systems, laser diagnostics.
- General support experience and ability to work in and on large electrical/electronic systems including fabrication, test, documentation, and maintenance using standard fabrication tools.
- Experience fabricating and repairing cabling and connectors, chassis, and printed circuit boards.
