About the role

The Department Manager directs and leads a high-performing team of Systems Managers, Project Managers, Technical Specialists, Architects, and developers to develop and implement business solutions that provide optimum business value. The position requires expert knowledge of Enterprise-scale business applications that will be utilized across multiple business units. As part of the role, the Department Manager provides thought leadership in a wide range of technology initiatives to support the business priorities of the company.

The Department Manager guides and oversees the work of the Build Systems Managers, each of whom manages build, implementation and integration for a suite of applications. The Department Manager ensures that synergies are achieved where possible across the application portfolio, champions the implementation of new approved technologies, oversees the development of application roadmaps, and ensures compliance with Enterprise Technology & Security (ETS) and Con Edison policies and procedures. The Department Manager maintains strong relationships with business partners and with vendors. The manager works closely with other ETS leadership to ensure secure and appropriate application integrations, thorough planning, secure process and procedures, and collaborative alignment with ETS Strategy. The manager also engages closely with the Application Managed Services (Run) team to ensure that new applications and enhancements are fully and thoroughly transferred to ensure optimal support by the Run team. This position works closely with Shared Services business partners to provide vendor oversight, strategic direction, project vision and maintain the reliable ongoing implementation, development and enhancement of IT systems to serve Shared Services.

Core Responsibilities
  • Manages and directs critical implementation initiatives for enterprise applications such as enterprise resource planning, enterprise asset and work management or large-scale customer billing and servicing. Management responsibilities include but are not limited to resources, scope, budget (costs), schedule & overall project plans and promotes the use of architects in significant ETS projects.
  • Works with various business teams across multiple organizations to strategically align ETS products to standardize processes while meeting emerging requests and system issues.
  • Builds and leads a high-performing inclusive/collaborative team of systems managers, architects, business analysts, developers, and testers in new system development initiatives, vendor system integrations and implementations. Aligns with technology partners in ETS Operations including infrastructure, ETS Planning including network planning and cybersecurity, Office of the CIO including enterprise analytics, ETS architecture, and data management.
  • Leads and manages large teams in the development of new/enhanced ETS products from project initiation through user acceptance and implementation including planning, requirements gathering, business analysis, design, development (coding, configuration, customization), testing, training, and implementation. ETS products include new custom applications, major enhancements to existing systems or vendor packaged applications, any of which may be enterprise-scale affecting multiple companies and departments and integrating with multiple systems. Transitions team project responsibilities to a long-term support structure after project implementation.
  • Monitors all aspects of the project life cycle including the business analysis and legacy data conversion phases of a project to ensure strategic business and ETSs project management, functional, compliance, cost management goals and KPIs are met. Lifecycles may be traditional Waterfall/Systems Development Lifecycle, Agile or other approved methodologies.
  • Implementation of new ideas, emerging or changing business needs, and scope or priority changes gaining alignment among multiple companies and groups.
  • Develops effective business relationships and manages and maintains open and effective communications with all stakeholders.
  • Supervises the development and evaluation of roadmaps for all applications, technologies and infrastructure, including vendor and internally developed applications.
  • Provides direction on significant, high-impact issues requiring coordination with all internal ETS groups and other organizations, including vendors, to ensure that issues are addressed. Directs team members as required for resolution.
  • Leads and develops a team of managers through coaching, performance management, and effective work assignment to drive aligned execution and business outcomes.
