The Sr. Database Administrator will be responsible for managing and optimizing our SQL Server farm, ensuring high availability, performance, and security for the databases. They will collaborate with these teams to implement and manage comprehensive database administration strategies and develop an enterprise-wide data operating model that covers people, processes, technology, and governance. Responsible for the implementation, configuration, maintenance, and performance management of critical SQL Server RDBMS systems, to ensure the availability and consistent performance of our applications.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine SQL Server administration and performance monitoring activities to ensure optimal operation of the SQL Servers in multiple versions, and in Development, Standard and Enterprise Editions.
  • Analyze and optimize both database and server performance to ensure efficient operations.Develop and maintain automated processes for routine database tasks, enhancing productivity through streamlined operations.
  • Provide project and enhancement work on a range of new and existing SQL Server databases.
  • Provide robust application support, collaborating closely with development teams.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues that affect application performance.
  • Manage SQL Server advanced features such Always On, SQL Server clustering, availability groups, replication, and log shipping solutions for scalability, disaster recovery, and high availability.
  • Manage SQL Server databases through multiple product lifecycle environments, from development to mission-critical production systems.
  • Configure and maintain database servers and processes, including monitoring of system health and performance, to ensure high levels of performance, availability, and security.
  • Participate in continuous process improvement.
  • Configure and maintain SQL Security controls and install SQL Server service packs and updates.
  • Create, change, and improve SQL Server Agent tasks and maintenance plans.
  • Create documentation and training for routine database administration activities.
  • Identify problem trends and proactively take action to reduce incidents.
  • Proactively monitor and report on system resources and capacity planning. Provide early warning of resource contentions and shortages to management with recommended course of action.
  • Independently analyze, solve, and correct issues in real time, providing problem resolution end-to-end.
  • Refine and automate regular processes, track issues, and document changes.
  • Assist developers with complex query tuning and schema refinement.
  • Provide support outside of normal office hours on a pre-planned basis and at short notice in emergency situations.
  • Monitor and assess data quality across various systems and databases, identifying areas for improvement and implementing measures to enhance data accuracy and consistency.
  • Collaborate with Data Governance team to develop and maintain privacy policies, procedures, and documentation and to define and manage metadata standards, taxonomies, and ontologies to facilitate effective data classification, search, and retrieval.
  • Participate in data access and security reviews to ensure compliance with data governance policies and prepare documentation for internal and external audits.
  • Establish and maintain metadata repositories and catalogs, ensuring consistent documentation of data assets, relationships, and lineage for a clear understanding of data flow and dependencies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field. Master's degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of 10+ years of experience in MS SQL Server Administration, preferably using SQL Server versions, including, but not limited to, SQL Server 2017, 2019, and 2022.
  • Over 5 years of experience with data management tools, metadata repositories, and data modeling concepts.
  • Expertise in Performance Tuning and Optimization (PTO), utilizing native monitoring and troubleshooting tools.
  • Experience with backup, restore, and recovery models.
  • Strong knowledge of High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for SQL Server.
  • Proficiency in SQL and PowerShell scripting.
  • Experience working with Windows Server, including Active Directory.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in the banking industry.
  • Experience with cloud services such as Microsoft Azure and AWS.
  • Knowledge of relevant data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA) and their impact on data governance practices.
  • Familiarity with risk and control frameworks, including ISO, NIST, and COBIT.
