The Duke Division of Surgical Sciences and Center for Human Systems Immunology is seeking a detail-oriented scientist to fulfill a key role as a Scientific Program Leader II. This unique position combines strategic support for the Division’s research initiatives with leadership in managing large-scale, complex scientific programs. The successful candidate will work closely with the Division Chief, Division Administrator, faculty, and cross-functional teams to develop and implement scientific strategies, foster collaboration among surgeons and researchers, and drive innovative research programs. In addition, this role will oversee program management for translational research projects, including preclinical studies, manufacturing, and clinical trials, ensuring alignment with scientific, financial, and administrative goals. Minimum Requirements:
- Completion of a bachelor’s degree in basic science, public health, clinical research or other related scientific field.
- Five years of program management and/or research experience.
- Experience in Biotech/Biopharma/Clinical Trials/GMP is strongly preferred. Additional training in project management or related training desired.

- Assist the Division Chief and Surgical Science investigators with developing scientific strategies to achieve programmatic goals and implement scientific decision-making processes. Develop, coordinate, and implement scientific research, financial, and administrative strategies essential to the successful management of strategic initiatives for the division. Specific initiatives may include support for state-of-the-art research, faculty development, and fostering collaboration and scientific discovery among surgeons, clinicians, and Division researchers.
- Research and identify opportunities for new and innovative research and develop the necessary cross-functional team of investigators, clinicians, and staff to successfully develop, build and conduct the research program. In addition, identify the resources necessary to accomplish the identified goals of those research programs.
- Serve as a liaison with the Department’s Research Development team to facilitate awareness of funding opportunities aligned with departmental research areas and programs. Support communication and coordination related to identified opportunities and assist with tracking and administrative oversight to help ensure timely and successful proposal submissions, in collaboration with and under the guidance of the Grants and Contracts team.
- Develop, coordinate, and implement programmatic and administrative strategies essential to the successful management of large scale, complex translational research projects conducted by principal investigator(s); perform a variety of duties involved in the organization, documentation, tracking, and compilation of program information and research outputs.
- Coordinate cross-functional teams as part of a matrix organization with Program Leader Is and support task assignment and monitor workload and project performance.
- Support the development, tracking, and monitoring of program budgets and statements of work, ensuring alignment with finance administrators and the grants and contracts teams.
