About the role

The Talbot laboratory, embedded within the Department of Bone Marrow Transplantation and Cell Therapy at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, is seeking to hire a dedicated and exceptional Scientist to lead studies in pediatric immune-oncology and solid tumor CAR T cell development. Our laboratory is part of a larger team of collaborative scientists within the Departments of Surgery and BMTCT with the ultimate goal of improving T-cell based immunotherapy targeting solid tumors and a focus on clinically translatable processes and results. The Talbot laboratory is specifically focused on understanding how transgenic wild type and mutated chemokine receptors can be exploited to drive homing of immune cells towards target pediatric tumors and confer enhanced biology, as well as understanding underlying microenvironmental interactions.

We are seeking a highly motivated individual with an interest in immunotherapy and basic immunology who seeks a work environment in which he/she has the opportunity to drive forward projects independently within the scope of the PI’s overall research umbrella. Active questioning, hypothesis generation, independent experimental work, and scientific curiosity are particularly encouraged.

The ideal candidate will have:

A PhD in immunology, immunotherapy, or a related discipline.

Extensive experience studying immune cell biology, immunotherapy, or related disciplines

Extensive experience with aseptic cell tissue culture, flow cytometry, molecular biology, and in vivo work with survival surgery experience particularly appreciated

Experience working with immune competent tissues, including tumor and tissue dissociation and immune cell subset recovery and analysis

Experience with generation of single cell datasets from dissociated tissues

Ability to independently design and execute experiments and interpret data, inclusive of figure generation and statistical analysis

Ability to work in a multidisciplinary, highly collaborative environment with excellent interpersonal skills

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Excellent multitasking abilities

Strong publication record

Track record of success training junior scientists and colleagues

Job responsibilities:

  • Coordinates multiple aspects of research projects and carries out laboratory experiments utilizing various laboratory techniques, and determines whether additional or other tools or methods are required
  • Provides input regarding research protocols and experiments. Sets up protocols and assists in developing new laboratory techniques as required.
  • Identifies experimental data pertinent to the analysis problem. Processes, organizes and summarizes data, reporting these experimental results as required. Monitors quality and integrity of recorded information and data. Maintains excellent laboratory and experimental records.
  • May draft sections of research manuscripts and grant applications
  • Provides basic lab operation support to include equipment maintenance and purchasing. Monitors inventory levels and orders lab supplies as needed. Performs calibration of instruments and equipment. Troubleshoots instrument performance and equipment issues.
  • Instructs other staff in laboratory techniques and procedures.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance
  • Performs other related duties as assigned in order to meet the goals of the department and institution

Minimum Education and/or Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant scientific area is required.

Minimum Experience:

  • Eight (8) years of relevant work experience is required.
  • Six (6) years of relevant work experience is required with a Master's degree.
  • Three (3) years of relevant work experience is required with a PhD.
  • Prior experience in lab techniques is preferred.
  • Experience in lab and scientific project coordination, maintenance, and other research support activities preferred. 
  • Prior experience with the generation of GEMMs in immunology and/or cancer biology is highly preferred.
