This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration heavy-lift launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to Earth’s orbit and beyond. Engineered with a reusable first stage and a seven-meter payload fairing, New Glenn is building the road to space.
As part of a unique and highly skilled team developing New Glenn’s next generation payload fairing, you’ll be responsible for driving the fairing development, qualification, and production. The Sr. Manager will be responsible for managing a diverse product team to perform launch vehicle structures and mechanisms conceptual and detailed design, drawing creation, product release, hardware manufacturing, and procurement to meet aggressive mass targets and schedule milestones within an acceptable risk posture. You will help set team technical direction requiring a wide application of sophisticated engineering principles, theories and concepts and knowledge of other related subject areas. You will closely coordinate with supplier management and internal manufacturing organizations to complete first-time system builds while solving schedule and technical issues as they arise. Additionally, you will be responsible for managing the career development, work performance, mentorship, and career and technical guidance for all members of your product team. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated dedication and attention towards safe and reliable spaceflight.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Recruit, hire, manage, delegate to, and mentor a diverse, equitable, and inclusive team
- Manage your direct reports’ professional development (e.g., hiring, performance reviews, compensation and promotion management, routine one-on-one development conversations) and coach them on performance.
- Develop technical plans to meet deliverables on an aggressive schedule
- Eliminate roadblocks for your team
- Develop modeling, drawing, and design for manufacturability processes that result in efficient and consistent released engineering products
- Perform technical leadership and make data-informed executive decisions when needed on design-related topics for the payload fairing
- Coordinate between sub-systems to ensure consistent design practices are being utilized where it is reasonable
- Identify and execute key areas to perform hardware prototyping and testing to fail fast and early
- Embody, promote, and coach the Blue Origin leadership principles
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of a B.S. degree (M.S. preferred) in engineering and 10+ years of experience with aircraft, spacecraft, launch vehicle structures, or automotive.
- Interest in managing technical teams and/or leading functional groups
- Experience in aeronautical or space vehicle frame design, manufacturing, and assembly for structures including metallics and/or composites
- Experience or familiarity with mechanisms such as release mechanisms, doors, electromechanical actuators, docking mechanisms, possibly including design, multibody analysis, fabrication, test and operation.
- Seasoned with pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
- Experience in managing flight hardware products from cradle to grave
- Experience with supplier management
- Experience in employee professional development and performance assessment and alignment
- Experience in documentation, design, and analysis artifact configuration control
- Experience leading multidisciplinary development projects, including managing requirements, priorities, scope, and schedule, and cost
- Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum
