About the role

Overview

Extension Agriculture & Natural Resources / 4-H Assistant supports the Agriculture & Natural Resources Extension Professor in delivering educational programs, maintaining demonstration projects, supporting youth development activities, and assisting with office and community outreach efforts. This position provides hands-on support for agriculture and natural resource programming, technology and robotics education, demonstration garden maintenance, pest monitoring projects, community events, and general Extension office operations.

The successful candidate will work with youth and community members, assist with educational programming, perform outdoor maintenance and agricultural tasks, and represent the Extension office at community events and activities.

This position requires flexibility, initiative, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

Ā 

Schedule

This position requires a flexible work schedule that may include evenings, weekends, and special events as needed. Work schedules will be coordinated with and approved by the Agriculture & Natural Resources Extension Professor based on program and operational needs.

This is a temporary funded part-time ending in December 2026.

Responsibilities

Agriculture & Natural Resources Support

  • Assist the Agriculture & Natural Resources Extension Professor with educational and outreach programs.
  • Support agriculture, horticulture, and natural resource projects and demonstrations.
  • Monitor and assist with pest, insect, and related agricultural research or educational projects.
  • Assist with data collection, observations, and reporting as directed.
  • Maintain demonstration plots, gardens, and landscape areas.

4-H Youth Development

  • Assist with planning, organizing, and conducting 4-H youth programs and activities.
  • Teach and support robotics and technology-related educational programs.
  • Work directly with youth participants in a positive, safe, and educational manner.
  • Help prepare educational materials and activities for youth programs and workshops.

Demonstration Garden & Grounds Maintenance

  • Plant, water, weed, prune, and maintain demonstration gardens and landscape areas.
  • Operate and maintain equipment such as lawn mowers, weed eaters, and other grounds maintenance tools.
  • Assist with seasonal landscaping and beautification projects.
  • Ensure outdoor areas are maintained in a safe and professional manner.

Office & Administrative Support

  • Assist with general office operations and administrative duties as assigned.
  • Answer phones, greet visitors, and provide customer service to clientele.
  • Assist with event preparation.
  • Support educational program logistics and material preparation.

Community Events & Outreach

  • Assist with community events, educational workshops, Heritage Days (formerly known as the Fair), other Extension activities.
  • Help with event setup, operation, and cleanup.
  • Represent the Extension office in a professional manner while interacting with community members and stakeholders.

Other Duties

  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned by the Agriculture & Natural Resources Extension Professor or Extension administration.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Basic computer and technology skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with youth programs, 4-H, education, or mentoring activities.
  • Experience with gardening, landscaping, agriculture, or natural resource management.
  • Experience operating lawn maintenance or agricultural equipment.
  • Experience with robotics, STEM, or technology education programs.
  • Customer service and office experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Interest in agriculture, natural resources, horticulture, youth development, robotics, or related fields.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a supervisor to develop and maintain a flexible work schedule.
  • Ability and willingness to work with youth and the general public.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions, work independently, and function effectively as part of a team.
