Career Advancement serves a student population of approximately 6,000 arts and sciences undergraduate students, in addition to alumni who have graduated within the last five years. Career Advancement plays a vital role in ensuring our students’ success after graduation. Career Advancement offers innovative and comprehensive career development services with a focus on pre-professional preparation, experiential education, and access to internship and full-time opportunities. Through career advising, programs, and comprehensive resources, Career Advancement supports undergraduate students and alumni as they develop the skills necessary to manage their career development, while working with alumni and employers to provide students with meaningful opportunities. Job Summary
 

Career Advancement is the undergraduate career services office at the University of Chicago. Reporting directly to the Associate Vice President and Executive Director of Career Advancement, the Deputy Director serves as a key member of Career Advancement’s senior leadership team. This position is responsible for supervising managers of multiple teams, including teams at UChicago’s global campuses and designing functional implementation strategies for unit priorities that have division-wide impact.

The Deputy Director has a highly diverse management portfolio that currently includes fundraising, alumni and parent engagement, communications, student experiential learning programs, international career programs, 4+1 graduate programs and 7 specialized pre-professional programs. Directly supporting department and unit priorities, the Deputy Director sets high-level strategy for each of their assigned functions and ensures subject matter experts can successfully reach University goals. In addition, the Deputy Director is responsible for budget goal-setting and planning for several critical programs, including student grant programs and industry preparation programming supported by major donors.

Responsibilities

• Designs implementation strategies for goals and priorities set by Executive Director and University leadership.
• Works closely with Executive Director and senior leadership team members on policy planning and office strategy.
• Manages donor gifts and collaborates across the Division, and with University Resources office to ensure that donor expectations are met.
• Represents the Department at internal and external meetings in areas of expertise.
• Manages and provides strategic oversight for six direct reports who oversee daily operations for their respective teams.
• Serves as Career Advancement’s liaison to the University’s central Alumni Relations and Development unit.
• Leads fundraising for Career Advancement, working closely with colleagues at Alumni Relations and Development to meet University fundraising goals in student career services.
• Oversees strategic communications, including office marketing, gift solicitation proposals, alumni and parent outreach, and internal communications.
• Manages strategic planning and goal-setting for several key budgets, including a large-scale undergraduate internship program offering 4,000+ opportunities annually.
• Sets high-level policy and strategic priorities for a series of student experiential learning programs, including a job shadowing program, career treks (employer site visits), and recruiting forum networking events.
• Supervises the Office’s international career initiatives and career staff based at UChicago’s global campuses, ensuring that all programs and outreach support the University’s global engagement and development goals.
• Oversees a team of expert career advisers leading specialized pre-professional programs for students seeking careers in business, law, policy, arts, journalism, engineering and entrepreneurship.
• Manages employees through subordinates, usually other managers. Establishes performance goals, allocates resources and assesses policies for direct subordinates.
• Directs development of new and current programs, such as on-campus recruiting events and career management programs, to support students and alumni in post-graduate planning and career pursuits.
• Expands and enhances the University's corporate network by developing marketing and outreach strategies, and meeting with employers and alumni to increase resources and employment opportunities to students.
