National Grid’s Graduate Development Program (GDP) is a year-long development program for recent college graduates who aspire to take on future leadership roles in a dynamic, ever-changing industry. Graduates will shape the future of National Grid. Bringing fresh thinking, new perspectives, and exploring with energy, we’ll give you real responsibility and an opportunity to move with purpose from day one – putting the power to supercharge your career in your hands.
Graduates start their careers at National Grid with an in-depth 3-week in-person Orientation which gives you exposure to all parts of the company, allows you to network with your Graduate cohort, GDP alumni, and senior leaders, and provides you with the opportunity to travel throughout our service territory in the northeast US. Following Orientation, you’ll begin working in full-time position outlined below and take part in ongoing development activities including quarterly development sessions, active mentorship, and a Hackathon Project.
About the Position
As an Associate Engineer, Distribution Planning and Asset Management, you will develop recommendations for required modifications and additions to sub-transmission and distribution facilities to enhance the resiliency of the system and to modernize the grid. In this role you will be doing the critical work that ensures the grid has the capacity to serve its forecasted future load, thus providing an essential service to every building in and member of the eastern New York Community.
This is a hybrid role based in Albany, New York.
What You’ll Do
As an engineer on this team, you will have the opportunity to shadow your fellow engineers for the first 6-12 months as you learn Distribution Planning and Asset Management.
In this role you will:
- Assist in activities in tracking regional distribution reliability performance and promoting actions to improve it.
- Conduct customer and distributed generation studies and interconnection compliance verification engineering activities.
- Assist regional customer operations in the technical operation of the distribution system.
- Provide support to other areas of National Grid such as Electric Operations, Regional Control Center, Substation Engineering, Distribution Design, Smart Grid & New Energy Solutions.
- Coordinate with Underground Cable and Civil Construction Operations to ensure safe engineering practices.
- Represent the company in industry and regulatory working groups as appropriate and assure the focus and attainment of business goals and objectives.
What You’ll Need
- Bachelor or Master's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution
- Graduated between May 2024 and June 2025
