The Pharmacy Data Specialist is responsible for supporting pharmacy operations and clinical initiatives through advanced data analysis, reporting, and business intelligence solutions. This role integrates clinical pharmacy expertise with healthcare analytics to evaluate medication utilization, patient outcomes, operational performance, and financial outcomes. The specialist collaborates with pharmacy leadership, clinical teams, finance, and information technology departments to develop insights that support data-driven decision making and continuous improvement across pharmacy services. This position requires strong experience with pharmacy services, healthcare data, SQL-based data analysis, and visualization tools such as Power BI within a hospital or health system environment.Job Description:
Primary Responsibilities:
1. Extract, analyze, and interpret pharmacy and clinical data to support operational, financial, and clinical decision-making.
2. Develop and maintain complex SQL queries and scripts to retrieve data from electronic health records (EHR), pharmacy dispensing systems, and enterprise data warehouses.
3. Design, develop, and maintain interactive dashboards and analytical reports using Power BI or similar business intelligence platforms.
4. Analyze medication utilization patterns, formulary adherence, pharmacy operational metrics, and clinical intervention data.
5. Support pharmacy leadership in monitoring key performance indicators including medication costs, utilization trends, and pharmacy service performance.
6. Collaborate with clinical pharmacists and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to analyze medication therapy outcomes and identify opportunities for clinical improvement.
7. Perform data validation and quality assurance to ensure data accuracy, consistency, and integrity across reporting systems.
8. Develop standardized reporting methodologies and documentation to support ongoing analytics and reporting needs.
9. Assist in the evaluation and development of pharmacy programs, including medication quality & safety monitoring, population health initiatives, clinical pharmacy services, and operational efficiency projects.
10. Support clinical research projects through cohort identification, data collection and statistical analysis.
11. Prepare reports and presentations summarizing analytical findings for pharmacy leadership and hospital administration.
12. Support regulatory reporting, quality initiatives, and compliance requirements related to pharmacy services.
13. Work collaboratively with information technology, informatics, and data governance teams to support data integration and reporting infrastructure.
14. Perform ad-hoc analysis as requested by pharmacy leadership or health system stakeholders.
Required Qualifications:
Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from an accredited school or college of pharmacy.
Minimum of three (3) years of clinical pharmacy experience in a hospital or ambulatory care setting, and/or completion of PGY-1 pharmacy residency.
Minimum of five (5) years of experience using SQL for data extraction, querying, and analysis.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working within an academic medical center or large integrated health system environment with exposure to pharmacy operations and clinical workflows.
Demonstrated experience developing data visualizations and dashboards using Power BI or comparable business intelligence tools.
Experience working with electronic health record (EHR) systems (Epic preferred), pharmacy dispensing systems, claims data, or healthcare data warehouses.
Experience analyzing large, complex healthcare datasets, including querying and integrating multiple data sources, along with proficiency in dimensional data models (e.g., star schemas, fact and dimension tables)
Strong analytical, organizational, and independent problem-solving skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex analytical information to clinical and operational stakeholders
Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing business needs in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
Experience in pharmacy informatics, healthcare analytics, or clinical data reporting.
Experience analyzing pharmacy financial performance, cost-benefit analysis, or drug utilization programs.
