Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is a supervisory position requiring the incumbent to perform duties in the Mycobacteriology and Mycology Department.  The incumbent will supervise Medical Laboratory Scientists I, II, and III performing mycobacteria identification and drug susceptibility testing, and mycology identification testing.  This position spends the majority of the time engaged in supervisory responsibilities. This includes communicating with, motivating, training, and evaluating employees in addition to planning and directing employees' work. The incumbent has the authority to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, or discipline subordinate employees or effectively recommend such action. The incumbent will also be required to develop performance expectations, meet with staff regularly to discuss performance, complete performance reviews, maintain vacation and work schedules, ensuring proper coverage, and complete timesheets.

 

Will supervise staff responsible for identification of Mycobacteria and Mycology isolates using all methodologies available in the laboratory including, but not limited to, conventional and molecular techniques.  This supervision will include personnel management, daily workload management, backup testing, and reporting of results.

 

Will supervise drug susceptibility testing of all TB isolates and send out of all TB isolates for molecular genotyping.  Will oversee send outs of TB and non-tuberculous mycobacteria for additional testing and characterization.

 

Will evaluate staff for testing proficiency and competence, and assure adequate staffing is in place to perform testing within the required times.  Will ensure cross-training in the various testing techniques to enhance personnel testing abilities and to maintain testing ability during staff absence.

 

Will ensure laboratory Quality Assurance is in place:  reviewing and revising Standard Operating Procedures, completing routine Proficiency Testing, maintaining instrument operability, etc.  Will evaluate laboratory data indicators for variations in testing performance.  Will participate in evaluation of new instruments and testing methods.

 

Communicate test results and interpretations to colleagues within the TB control program and to providers.  Will answer phone inquiries and fax patient specimen reports.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of terminology, principles and techniques used in analysis and testing. 

Knowledge of procedures, techniques & equipment used in lab testing and analysis. 

Skill in the use of lab equipment. 

Ability to communicate effectively. 

Ability to work independently. 

Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments. 

Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

 

Qualifications:

Minimum - Florida Clinical or Public Health Laboratory License in Microbiology.

Preferred - Bachelor of Science; Master’s or PhD.
