Description

Be at the forefront of change and become a part of the innovative and forward-thinking academic team at the University of Michigan-Flint’s Social Work Department in the rapidly expanding College of Health Sciences! The Social Work Department is searching for an Assistant or Associate Professor in either a tenure or clinical track who will teach in the BSW and MSW programs. We seek a candidate whose substantive areas include social work research and policy, evaluation of clinical practice, trauma-informed social work practice, and social work practice in health care settings, and who are highly collaborative in their approach to teaching and learning. The BSW program is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). The MSW program is currently in pre-candidacy and aims to achieve Initial Accreditation by summer 2027. This is a full time, hybrid instructional position. Currently, faculty in the College of Health Sciences are required to report to campus minimally two days a week. This is subject to change based on program, department, college or university needs. The desired start date for this position is Fall 2025.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Teaching

Teach in both the BSW and MSW program.

Scholarship

Develop and maintain a scholarly agenda according to the College of Health Sciences scholarship requirements for Tenure- or Clinical-Track Faculty and accreditation criteria.

Service

All CHS faculty members are expected to provide service to the University, college, department, profession and the community. Consistent with the mission of CHS and the University, professional service contributions to the Flint and regional community are valued as well as national and international contributions.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • An MSW from a CSWE accredited program and an accredited University

  • A doctoral degree in Social Work or a closely related field as outlined below:

      • For a Clinical-Track position, a Doctorate of Social Work (DSW) or a professional doctorate in a related field

      • For a Tenure-Track position, a Ph.D. in social work or a Ph.D. in a related field

  • For a Clinical-Track Assistant Professor position, a minimum of three years of full-time relevant post MSW clinical experience is required
  • For a Clinical-Track Associate Professor position, a minimum of five years full-time relevant post MSW clinical experience is required
  • Eligibility for a tenure-track or clinical-track associate professor position is assessed upon hire according to the College of Health Sciences Promotion and Tenure Guidelines.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student-centered pedagogy, mentorship, and ability to work effectively with culturally heterogeneous student population
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct impactful scholarly research
  • Demonstrated commitment to promote diversity, inclusion, and engagement in teaching, research, and service

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching BSW or MSW courses at a CSWE-accredited program in all teaching modes, including online synchronous and asynchronous courses and face-to-face courses
  • For a tenure-track position, a minimum of 2 years of full-time post-MSW professional practice experience is strongly preferred
  • Eligibility for professional social work licensure in the state of Michigan
  • Evidence of ability to publish in peer-reviewed venues
  • Evidence of a commitment to interdisciplinary research and obtaining external funding
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across disciplines
  • Experience conducting community-engaged research and/or successful collaboration with community partners 
  • Experience with CSWE accreditation and reaffirmation at the BSW or MSW level 
  • An interest in trauma-informed social work 
  • School Social Work Certification
