Job Description
Provides high-level, thoughtful and strategic legal advice and counseling on matters as assigned by the Chief Legal Officer, Sr. Vice President, or Sr. Counsel, related to employment law and other areas of the law based on ALSAC’s legal needs Preferred candidates will have in-depth experience handling employment matters in various forums, including but not limited to employee leave and accommodations, federal and state nondiscrimination matters, state and federal DOL matters, policy review, federal and state workplace reporting requirements, FCRA compliance, and workplace investigations. Must have a willingness to learn and understand fundraising; state compliance issues and charitable registrations; gaming issues; raffle licenses; special event licensing and permitting; business licenses; grant applications and compliance; insurance and risk management; property issues and disposition; government relations and legislative monitoring; reviewing and drafting contracts; technology and marketing matters; and special projects. The allocation of work and projects that this position will manage among these areas will be determined by the Chief Legal Officer, Sr. Vice President, Vice President, Sr. Director or Director- Legal and may vary and will depend upon the needs of ALSAC. Identifies legal issues and works with internal departments to find solutions to legal challenges in a cooperative, efficient and effective manner. Represents ALSAC in dealing with other attorneys, entities, government officials, donors and other third-parties.
1. Uses a high degree of concentration and analytical ability to provide legal advice and counsel on matters as assigned by the Chief Legal Officer in areas of law including, but not limited to fundraising; state compliance issues and charitable registrations; gaming issues; raffle licenses; special event licenses; alcohol permits; business licenses; grant applications and compliance; insurance and risk management; property issues and disposition; government relations and legislative monitoring; reviewing and drafting contracts; HR and policy related matters; technology and marketing matters; research projects; and special projects, and other areas impacting ALSAC. Uses a demonstrated higher level knowledge and competency in one or more areas of the law.
2. Uses demonstrated ability to handle a higher-level issue from inception to completion skillfully; keeps supervisor appropriately informed and updated; understands which issues and decisions need to be elevated and which can be handled; and consistently handles these higher level issues appropriately, identifies nuances in issues presented and the enterprise-wide impact of their advice and proposed solutions; and consistently handles these higher level issues appropriately.. Works as a strategic business partner with internal departments and to represent the organization to third parties well. Ensures all polices and guidelines are followed and resolves any issues identified in review. Performs essential job functions in an established office environment under normal lighting and climate control tolerances.
3. Uses strong interpersonal skills, listening skills, negotiating skills and the ability to work with a variety of individuals within and outside the organization and find solutions to legal issues and challenges. Identifies legal issues and work with internal departments to find solutions to legal challenges in a cooperative, efficient and effective manner. Recognizes and considers enterprise-wide impact if issues and solutions. Develops policies relating to industry-specific issues and internal practices and action plans for solving issues and assists in implementation.
4. Must represent ALSAC and the Legal Department well and in a manner that allows for the successful and efficient resolution of matters and legal issues. Works with the Chief Legal Officer and other Senior Leadership, Legal, state officials, attorneys, entities, donors and third parties on matters of significance affecting ALSAC.
