Backend Software Engineer

About the role

Verity is a wholly owned subsidiary of Gevo, dedicated to providing full-service carbon project development through its proprietary digital MRV (Measure, Report, Verify) platform, powered by distributed ledger technology. Verity specializes in carbon accounting and services aimed at maximizing the value of environmental benefits throughout the entire business system.

Gevo is a next generation, “low-carbon” fuel company focused on the development and commercialization of renewable alternatives to petroleum-based products. Low-carbon fuels reduce the carbon intensity, or the level of greenhouse gas emissions, compared to standard fossil-based fuels across their lifecycle. The most common low-carbon fuels are renewable fuels. Gevo is focused on the development and production of mainstream fuels like gasoline and jet fuel using renewable feedstocks that have the potential to lower greenhouse gas emissions at a meaningful scale and enhance agricultural production, including food and other related products.

About the role

We’re seeking an experienced Backend Software Engineer to lead the design and development of our API ecosystem—the backbone enabling seamless integrations between our platform and our customers’ systems. In this role, you’ll architect secure, scalable, and high-performance backend services, establish integration standards, and ensure our APIs are a first-class product for both internal and external developers.

This is a hands-on role with significant influence over technical direction, architecture, and best practices, working across teams to power mission-critical workflows in the renewable fuels and ESG data space.

What You'll Do

  • Architect and implement a robust API ecosystem, including authentication/authorization, versioning, rate limiting, and documentation standards.
  • Design scalable, maintainable backend systems that support high-volume integrations and data flows between internal and external systems.
  • Collaborate with product and customer engineering teams to define API requirements that meet both technical and business needs.
  • Establish integration best practices, patterns, and governance to ensure long-term maintainability.
  • Implement monitoring, logging, and observability for API performance and reliability.
  • Work with security teams to ensure compliance with industry regulations and data privacy requirements.
  • Drive adoption of event-driven and asynchronous processing patterns to improve resilience and scalability.
  • Mentor engineers, lead technical discussions, and contribute to the growth of the engineering team.

What You Bring

  • Proven experience owning backend/API architecture from concept to production at scale.
  • Strong understanding of RESTful API design.
  • Deep knowledge of authentication, authorization, and secure API practices (OAuth2, JWT, etc.).
  • Experience integrating with external systems and third-party APIs in complex environments.
  • Strong communication skills to work effectively with cross-functional and customer-facing teams.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s/Master’s in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years in backend software development, including 3+ years designing APIs and integrations at scale.
  • 3+ years with Golang in production systems.
  • Experience with C# and .NET Web API development.
  • Experience with Java, Kotlin, or other JVM languages.
  • Strong SQL skills and understanding of relational and non-relational databases.
