Performs as the team lead for the other coders and provide relevant guidance, training and work distribution. Will oversee as well as perform activities in support of all coding/billing in support of revenue cycle and charge entry, to include review of both CPT and ICD-10 code selection, review of billing processes and practices (charge capture) as well as verification of charges for inpatient services, outpatient services, professional billing and surgical procedures; and other duties as assigned. Requires Certification.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Coordinates and distributes workload to team; trains and develops team members to improve productivity and high-performance levels; keeps team members up to date on changes affecting coding and billing procedures.
- Assists in the evaluation of team members; trains team members on electronic billing changes or changes in software relating to coding and billing of professional services.
- Reviews and resolves coding or billing problem situations; responds to inquiries, works with A/R team to resolve payment denials due to incorrect CPT or ICD-10 coding errors.
- Audits coders work periodically; reports findings to Coding Manager. Works with coders to develop efficient work processes for maximum coding ability within a defined time frame. Verifies coders are coding daily services to ensure all provided services have been captured.
- Maintains and reviews daily work queues for professional services provided in various locations.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Associate’s degree preferred
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification required
- 5 years of coding experience is highly preferred but not required
- Extensive knowledge of CPT and ICD-10 coding
- Knowledge of government regulations as they relate to teaching physician documentation and billing guidelines
- Understanding of the importance of compliance with all government, department, and contractual regulations regarding coding and billing; and provider requirements
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of University of Maryland’s Faculty Physician’s Inc. salary range for this position. Some candidates will not be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, internal equity, responsibility factor and span of control, education/training and other qualifications.
