Senior Packaging Engineer

Position Summary
Position responsibilities are at an individual contributor senior level in a high pace research and development environment as a part of a high performing team. Responsibilities include conceptualize, design, develop, revise, coordinate and implement packaging structures for products under the authority of STERIS IPT Engineering R&D Team. Work with multiple manufacturing sites, including aseptically filled, hazardous, and nonhazardous materials. Identify and propose advanced packaging technologies to better satisfy internal and external customer needs. Identify and implement, as approved, packaging development process improvements to increase functional area deliverables. Investigate and resolve package problems and complaints. Support the interface between packaging and package production equipment to ensure successful packaging implementation and production operations. Position will function within a World Class Safety culture.
This position is 100% onsite for the Plymouth MN office.
Duties
• Function as in-house packaging expert to create packaging for new products as well as evaluate and identify cost out opportunities in existing packaging designs.
• Work with Industrial Designer and Mechanical Engineers to create an effective and commercially viable packaging design based on the “Voice of the Customer” that complements and reverberates the product inside.
• Responsible for understanding packaging requirements and shipment regulations for all regions consumable and capital equipment is sold into.
• Write and update test protocols, SOPs, and component specifications.
• Conduct engineering analysis and testing to meet requirements for each region the product is sold to, including regions outside of US.
• Collaborate with all associated STERIS functional groups, such as Marketing, Product Development, Manufacturing, Regulatory, Quality Systems, Engineering, and Purchasing. Packaging must comply with hazardous materials transportation, FDA, EPA, cGMP, and ISO regulations and guidelines.
• Conduct cost benefit analysis of manual versus various levels of automation packaging options
• Maintain all test records in an orderly, readily retrievable format. Implement, coordinate, and/or supervise applicable UN design qualification testing, periodic re-testing, and, as applicable, production testing.
• Work with internal STERIS and external vendor personnel. Typical contacts include site Directors, Managers, Project Managers and individual contributors in many functional areas, such as Marketing, Product Development, Purchasing, Quality Systems, Manufacturing, Maintenance, Packaging Development, contract packagers, and packaging manufacturers.
• Use Creo for packaging modeling and Windchill PLM system.
• Practice a World Class Safety philosophy on and off the job. Achieve an injury free personal Safety record.
• Based on project load, some travel may be necessary.
Required Education and Experience:
Education:
Bachelor of Science (required), or Master of Science (preferred) from an accredited institution in Packaging Engineering. Other applicable majors with appropriate experience will be considered.
Experience:
5+ years packaging design and engineering experience, preferably in the pharmaceutical and/or medical device industry with a knowledge of aseptic packaging technology and materials is desired. Creativity and excellent skills in written and verbal communication required.
