Sun River Health is a Federally Qualified, Non-Profit Health Center serving communities in Suffolk, Rockland, Orange, Dutchess, Ulster, Sullivan, Columbia and Westchester County. Sun River Health is currently seeking a full-time Medical Director of Psychiatry to join our team supporting multiple sites.

Position Summary

Diagnosis and treatment of patients in his/her specialty area; collaboration and supervision of nurse practitioners and physician’s assistants; participation in planning and developing health care services in his/her specialties, treatment of conditions and illnesses within the scope of the physician’s specialty, referral and follow-up of patients when indicated, participation in after-hours coverage to insure 24-hour availability of care for Center patients. Performs job duties in compliance with systems and job specific standards.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities for a Site Medical Director:

  • Conduct patient histories, physical exams, and prescribe treatment and medication based on evidence-based standards.
  • Provide direct psychiatric and addiction treatment in accordance with professional guidelines and best practices.
  • Coordinate tests, referrals, and external care for patients.
  • Maintain legible, confidential, and appropriate documentation of medical records and case files.
  • Supervise clinical activities and documentation of medical providers, including protocol review, telephone triage, and follow-up procedures.
  • Maintain collaborative agreements with psychiatric nurse practitioners.
  • Participate in provider meetings and contribute to multidisciplinary treatment planning.
  • Lead and participate in quality improvement initiatives such as peer reviews, audits, and focused reviews.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations in clinical systems and care delivery.
  • Set standards for preventive care and diagnostic screening within specialty areas.
  • Provide psychiatric education and in-service training for medical and mental health staff.
  • Participate in continuing education relevant to clinical practice.
  • Advocate for patients and support their psychosocial needs in collaboration with other departments.
  • Consult with administration, nursing, social work, and substance abuse services to evaluate and improve care delivery.

Essential Job Qualifications

  • Minimum Education Requirement: Doctorate Degree (including MD, DO, DD, PhD, etc.)
    • Has Board certification in either Internal Medicine or Psychiatry.
    • Has Board certification in either Addiction Medicine or Addiction Psychiatry.
    • Active Buprenorphine license (or eligible to receive license) required
  • Minimum Licensure: Board Certification, Physician License, and CPR/BLS
  • Required Skills & Knowledge:
    - Knowledge of diagnostic and treatment procedures that nurse practitioners are trained to do and are necessary for practicing in health care centers.
    - Competence in delivery of health care to patients (including preventative health education)
    - Ability to collaborate with other members of the Health Center in order to maintain high quality standards and achieve client satisfaction.
    - Bilingual in both English and Spanish (orally and written) is preferred

Salary Range: $252,288.40 - $274,055.60 per year based on licensure and experience
