Job Summary:

JOB SUMMARY
The Mgr., Research Programs serves as program manager for clinical research studies, including but not limited to assisting in the development of recruitment goals; participating in the clinical study budget development and negotiation process; supervising a team of clinical research staff, including nurses and coordinators; communication of performance expectations; conducting performance evaluations; and monitors qualify assurance standards, programs, and procedures within the team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Independently manages workflow to achieve and maintain performance standards.

• Manages the components of a clinical research program(s).
• Assigns and reviews work; effectively prioritizes tasks and work assignments.
• Plans, organizes, and completes projects in an efficient manner.
• Can distinguish critical needs/problems from less urgent ones.
• Demonstrates ability to prioritize tasks and issues.
• Participates in professional associations and development activities to remain informed regarding new developments in the field and disseminates information to the team/department.

2. Monitors qualify assurance standards, programs, and procedures within the team.

• Reviews that work is being conducted using VUMC approved processes.
• Takes ownership of problems brought to their attention.
• Follows through from analysis to problem resolutation.
• Creates and conducts complex QA/QI audits.

3. Supervises a team of clinical research staff, including nurses and coordinators.

• Communicates in and across teams to maximize effectiveness, efficiency, and information sharing.
• Works as a team to accomplish common departmental goals.
• Willingly accepts responsibility and performs expected and unexpected tasks.
• Delegates tasks as appropriate and follows up to assure completion.
• Initiates and contributes to the development and/or modification of policies and procedures.

4. Assists in the development of recruitment goals and in community outreach efforts (e.g., persons with sickle cell)

• Work with clinicians to understand recruitment capabilities at VUMC and partnering sites.
• Work with community organizations and patient advocates to return data back to the communities through multiple avenues (e.g. apps, web resources, emails, social media, conferences).

5. Participates in the clinical study budget development and negotiation process.

• Leads team discussion to generate cost effective ideas.
• Designs, develops, and revises standards, utilizing community and national standards, research findings, and bench marking data, e.g. budgets, guidance documents, determination letters, etc.
• Develops clinical study budgets and negotiates with sponsors as well as internal departments.

6. Maintains current and complete status of projects in the Institutional Review Board (IRB) system.

• Keeps abreast of and applies regulatory guidelines and institutional/departmental policies and procedures.
• Reviews that research is being conducted in accordance with IRB approved protocols.
• Develops and submits research protocol updates as needed in accordance with IRB expectations.

7. Serves as a resource for staff queries around budget issues, contract terms, billing questions, and Institutional guidelines.
