The Nuclear Facility Operations Specialist II supports the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) High Hazard Facilities, Baker facility or assigned as an Operator Technician II. The Operator Technician II will perform support duties to maintain facility, operability and mission support as detailed below. This position is interchangeable with the same position at the BEEF facility. The primary purpose is to ensure that facility operability is consistently safely maintained according to U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), federal, and state requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work under general supervision of the Operations/Facility Supervisor with limited guidance. Exercises discretion and independent judgement on selected work activities.
  • Support operations and maintenance at High Hazard facilities to maintain a condition and configuration to accept and support programs and projects.
  • Access buildings, conduct walk-downs, inspections, and/or monitoring rounds to verify facility readiness to conduct or continue operations.
  • Perform system lineups in accordance with approved procedures and checklists.
  • Perform normal and emergency operation of installed facility structures, systems, and components in support of facility operations.
  • Provide support for execution of program/project activities and data collection.
  • Assist with assigned tasks, FWIP, opening/closing facility, sweeps, chemical management, submitting work requests, logbook, facility rounds, and other task as assigned.
  • Ability to be qualified as an LED and perform Operational and Abnormal Drills for assigned locations. 
  • Support explosive operations as needed to include Access Point of Operations (Baker) or other activities as assigned.
  • Work with/around radiological materials.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in field related to the position plus at least 2 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Experience working with requirements-based systems for areas such as facility operations or maintenance operations.
  • Prior explosive experience is a plus.
  • Training or experience with facility and project operations; or chemical handling, storage, transfer, and work-controlled release activities.
  • Training or experience in areas related to facilities such as those found within the US Department of Defense or another DOE facilities a plus.
  • Ability to read and follow detailed instructions utilizing Standard Operating Procedures. Conduct in-service inspections and system surveillances.
  • Requires excellent verbal and written communication skills. Computer skills in MS Word, Excel, and MS Outlook are essential.
  • Work hours for this position will be 4/10’s, Monday – Thursday (subject to change). with overtime required on a periodic basis.
  • The primary work location will be at the Nevada National Security Site (located 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada) at Baker or as assigned within HEF/FAO. 
  • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
