About the Opportunity
The City Attorney’s Office is seeking a Paralegal (Promotional Only) to join our team. This position will provide critical support to attorneys in a fast-paced municipal law environment by conducting legal research, drafting legal documents, organizing case materials, analyzing information, and coordinating responses to written discovery, subpoenas and public records requests.
This position is designated as confidential and "at will," subject to discharge without cause and without the right of appeal.
What You'll Do
This position is responsible for a wide range of critical legal assistance, including:
Legal Research and Case Preparation
Support attorneys by gathering information, conducting routine legal research, and reviewing case materials, statutes, and legal opinions. This includes preparing case summaries, organizing supporting documentation, and assisting in the development of pleadings, discovery materials, and other litigation-related documents that help attorneys prepare for hearings, meetings, and trials.
Records, Subpoenas, and Public Records Act Support
Coordinate the collection, review, and processing of documents responsive to written discovery, subpoenas, and Public Records Act requests. Tasks include organizing materials from various departments, reviewing records for relevance and confidentiality, assisting with redactions, and maintaining accurate tracking to ensure timely, compliant, and well-documented responses.
Document Drafting and Review
Prepare drafts of correspondence, legal summaries, and preliminary legal documents, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and adherence to legal and procedural requirements. This work also involves reviewing documents for completeness and proper formatting before they are finalized for attorney review.
Case and File Coordination
Organize and maintain case files, exhibits, reports, and evidence needed for litigation and administrative proceedings. Responsibilities include coordinating witness materials, preparing binders and exhibits, maintaining calendars and deadlines, and ensuring attorneys have timely access to accurate and well-organized case information.
Administrative and Office Support
Perform a variety of legal administrative tasks that contribute to the efficient operation of the City Attorney’s Office. This includes preparing reports, organizing legal records, supporting office communications, coordinating schedules, and assisting with general administrative functions that keep daily operations running smoothly. Serve as backup to the Legal Litigation Assistant for court filings and other related litigation tasks.

Demonstrate skill in legal research, fact-finding, and summarizing complex information clearly and accurately.
Be capable of drafting high-quality legal documents, correspondence, and reports.
Apply rules of evidence, legal ethics, and court procedures appropriately to assigned tasks.
Communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing, with attorneys, staff, officials, and the public.
Exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and manage sensitive and privileged information responsibly.
Be highly organized and able to handle multiple deadlines in a fast-paced legal environment.
Establish effective working relationships with staff, departments, and members of the public.
Use legal research tools, computer systems, and software effectively.
Experience and Qualifications for Success!
Possession of the minimum education, experience, and/or certifications required to qualify as a Paralegal as required by Business & Professions Code Section 6450(c). To be considered for this position, applicants must meet one of the eligibility criteria.
Additionally, at least three years’ experience as a Paralegal, with a background in a public agency law office, or an equivalent combination of training and experience is preferred.
