Position Summary

We are currently undergoing a transformative revolution in artificial intelligence (AI) and its application is expanding to all areas of work. In drug discovery and development, AI impacts many processes including early target discovery and validation, molecule design and optimization, preclinical and clinical studies, market assessment and commercialization.

At BMS, our oncology strategies are driven by real-world data evidence. To facilitate novel target discovery and support drug development programs in oncology, we have deeply characterized a large compendium of multi modal bulk and single cell/spatial data from public and internal real-world patient cohorts across cancers. These data are housed under structured and unstructured databases and have been routinely used to mine evidence to inform novel target nomination and support oncology portfolio programs, via a wide range of bioinformatics and analytical approaches. While these analyses are critical, they are time-consuming and often require deep bioinformatics and computational biology background making them less accessible to broader scientists.

To improve the speed and democratize analyses and data, we are looking for a highly motivated graduate or undergraduate student to join us on a 10-week summer internship program to build an AI agent and/or workflow to automate routine and/or novel bioinformatics analyses to support oncology drug discovery and development (herein called RWD AI Agent). The RWD AI Agent will be able to interact with human scientists via natural language, make decision on what tools/analyses and datasets to use, execute these analyses and return results in natural language together with appropriate data/visualization. Additional features such as revision of analyses upon human feedback and intervention, ability to learn new analyses, and interaction with other AI agents and LLM models can be explored and implemented but not required.

This full-time internship will take place June- August 2026.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement an API interface for searching and querying RWD data
  • Design and implement the RWD AI agent/workflow for RWD analyses
  • Benchmark performance of RWD AI agent
  • Write reports, present results to cross-functional R&D groups
