As a Research Assistant I, you will play a crucial role in advancing our scientific research efforts. Your responsibilities will include ensuring the welfare of animals in accordance with regulatory guidelines, conducting complex studies, and performing various technical skills such as clinical observations, dosing techniques, and sample collections. You will also be involved in process improvement initiatives, training and mentoring staff, and maintaining client confidentiality. What you will be doing:

  • Ensure animals are cared for according to regulatory guidelines and ethical principles.

  • Perform animal husbandry duties as needed.

  • Report and resolve animal care concerns.

  • Understand regulatory requirements (USDA, AAALAC).

  • Interpret and understand complex protocols.

  • Understand good research practice (GXP) principles.

  • Operate data collection systems.

  • Manage animal room requirements, study management, data organization, QA/QC audit response, communication skills, and quality check procedures.

  • Conduct basic and complex studies independently and support less experienced staff.

  • Identify and address protocol, SOP, and schedule issues.

  • Work across groups with multiple species.

  • Maintain client confidentiality.

  • Perform clinical observations and data measurements (body weights, food consumption, tumor measurements, body temperatures, blood pressure, ECG, etc.).

  • Execute basic and advanced dosing techniques (oral gavage, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous, infusion, juvenile dosing, etc.).

  • Collect various samples (blood, urine, feces, non-histological tissue).

  • Handle animals with proper restraint methods.

  • Perform anesthesia, sedation, aseptic techniques, euthanasia, and blood processing procedures.

  • Edit and schedule functions using data collection systems.

  • Serve as a key trainer for specific technical skills.

  • Lead complex procedures and delegate technical responsibilities.

  • Train, assist, and mentor staff.

  • Review and develop new procedures and SOPs.

  • Identify and communicate process improvements.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree. BSc or equivalent or MSc required.

​OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education.

  • AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technician level is encouraged, but not required.
