About the role
- The RFE/Appeal Senior Associate Attorney is responsible for providing legal oversight, quality control, and strategic guidance for a defined segment of the RFE and Appeal team. This role ensures the legal accuracy, completeness, and consistency of submissions, supports the development of staff attorneys, and collaborates with production supervisors to streamline operations. The ideal candidate brings strong legal and advocacy experience in immigration law, excellent leadership skills, and a proactive approach to improving team performance and case quality.
What you'll do
- Provide legal review and final sign-off on RFE, NOID, NOIR, Denial, and Appeal response drafts prepared by staff attorneys.
- Offer real-time legal support and escalations for staff attorneys and team leads during Phase 2 execution.
- Mentor and provide ongoing training to staff attorneys to strengthen legal writing, analysis, and procedural accuracy.
- Collaborate with production supervisors to identify and resolve quality issues, bottlenecks, or rework trends.
- Conduct legal audits of completed RFE/NOID/NOIR responses to ensure alignment with USCIS expectations and best legal practices.
- Stay informed of changes in immigration policy and guidance and ensure consistent application across team outputs and collaborate with operations partners to implement process changes as appropriate.
- Lead or support internal initiatives aimed at improving legal quality, training processes, and operational effectiveness.
- Handle complex cases or high-priority escalations that require senior-level analysis and strategic planning.
- Support legal training programs for new hires and continuing education for current team members.
- Collaborate with other teams and departments across the firm to ensure consistency of approach to interpretation and handling of matters.
- Ability to take accountability for a division of the assigned RFE/Appeals legal team.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Minimum 5 years as an active member in good standing of a U.S. state bar
- Minimum 4–5 years of experience in family-based and humanitarian immigration law (e.g., VAWA, T Visa, U Visa, AOS, I-130, Medical Deferred Actions)
- Strong understanding of USCIS trends, RFE/NOID/NOIR/Denial response strategies, and evidence requirements
- Experience mentoring attorneys or managing legal workflows in a high-volume environment
- Strong legal writing, editing, and analytical skills, especially in preparing persuasive and well-supported RFE responses
- In-depth knowledge of family-based and humanitarian immigration law, including VAWA, U visa, T visa, Adjustment of Status, and related applications
- Ability to identify trends, inconsistencies, and gaps in legal arguments or evidence
- Skilled in mentoring and coaching attorneys to improve legal quality and efficiency
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to maintain consistency across a high volume of cases
- Excited to build partnership with operations teams to ensure the efficient provision of legal services to clients in a high-volume environment
