Summary
The Department of Medicine is seeking an experienced Director, Business Operations to lead the strategic direction of the Sections of General Internal Medicine, Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, Health Services Research, and Epidemiology and Population Health to ensure the current and long-term business goals are met. These Sections include over 450 faculty and staff at 8 inpatient and outpatient clinical locations across the greater Houston area. This role oversees an operating budget of approximately $100 million, which includes $30 million in research funding from private, state, and federal sponsors. This position is eligible for an annual performance-based bonus.
This position may be eligible to work a hybrid work arrangement within the Greater Houston, TX area after a 6-month training period.
Job Duties
- Responsible for developing and directing the long-range strategic business plan for the Sections. This includes preparation of business analyses, proposals, implementation plans for new programs, and the design and implementation of changes to existing programs.
- Direct the daily operation of multiple sections including, but not limited to, finance, human resources, faculty affairs, patient care, research, educational, and operational activities.
- Manage multiple teams led by managers and professionals, including defining work responsibilities and prioritization, setting performance development plans and goals, and conducting annual performance evaluations.
- Oversee financial management and accountability of multiple functions, including budget administration, performing cost assessments, monitoring financial transactions, and financial reporting. Make strategic decisions based on the financial data.
- Develop staffing plans and productivity guidelines according to budget availability, staffing grids, and Section needs.
- Create partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to achieve strategic aims.
- Develop and implement successful strategies for revenue growth, expense control, and operational efficiency.
- Negotiate and implement the human resources activities for the section, including hiring, terminations, salary, and disciplinary actions.
- Formulate policies and guidelines for Section activities.
- Lead the creation, identification, and analysis of metrics to improve business performance and drive business actions.
- Direct special projects or programs.
- Occasional travel to clinical sites in the Greater Houston area.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Eleven years of directly related experience with four years of supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree. Seven years of directly related experience with four years of supervisory experience.
