The Field System Specialist is the liaison between the engineering and technical work groups. They prepare work orders, create circuit cards, submit material requisitions, update drawings, support operations, and provide technical support expertise for the technician groups.

 This is a represented staff position with the IBEW Union. 

  • Performs work of and conveys work assignments, management or engineering directions, and work instructions to an assigned group of employees engaged in the preparation of work authorization documents for technicians and other support personnel in Imagining, Voice, Telephone, Transmissions, Cable, Timing and Wire; such as detail work instructions, specifications, engineering drawings and schematics, equipment and materials needed, estimated labor hours, identifying hazards, test equipment, and support equipment.
  • In addition to those listed below; directs, makes work assignments, participates in, and monitors progress toward the completion of employee work assignments. Coordinates activities of technical personnel under his/her direction with those of management or engineering personnel.
  • May act as a liaison between customer and contractor personnel.
  • Provide status of work assignments identify problem areas and recommend appropriate solutions. Consult with engineering personnel, work originators, and management to correct problems, modify work plans, or recommend alternative approaches.
  • Assures technical feasibility of prescribed tasks and determines individual responsibilities. Performs independently or follows on-site engineering instructions while performing difficult or critical troubleshooting.
  • Assist in the creation and execution of a structured on-the-job (OJT) training program.
  • Act as a mentor by advising, counseling, teaching, coaching, and guiding technicians.
  • Maintain documentation regarding completion of OJT training assignments. Interprets engineering, project management plans and manufacturers documents, manuals, catalogs, drawings and schematics, and related technical and administrative publications needed to develop work authorization documents, (i.e., Maximo work orders, trouble tickets, temporary test configuration documents) including work sequences, methods and procedures related to the fabrication, installation, operation, and maintenance of communication systems and equipment.
  • Analyze work by performing field surveys such as reviewing and observing work areas, making notes, drawing sketches, taking photographs, creating parts lists, equipment configuration, and collaborating with engineering, system planners, technicians, and other support personnel to facilitate the preparation of work authorization documents.
  • Writes and reviews work orders with customers, technicians, engineering, and other support personnel to clarify work requirements.
  • As needed may participate in meetings, and technical discussions as necessary to ensure a complete understanding of system work requirements.
  • Analyzes schedule dates and material/parts delivery dates for developing work schedules and project competition dates and projected labor hours needed to complete work assignments/projects.
  • Writes technical descriptions specifying material qualities, parts lists, and properties, utilizing knowledge of material standards and communications equipment and materials. Working with Logistics generates Material Requests (MR) for the procurement of parts and materials needed.
  • Organizes material and completes work authorization assignments according to department standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology. Maintains records and files of work and revisions, may select photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts to illustrate work is configured correctly and verified for closing out work authorization documentation.
  • Communicates with technicians, engineers, customers, etc. in troubleshooting issues or problems as they occur. Provides clarification of work instructions to others.
