About the role

Job Description Summary

The Senior Principal Engineer (SPE) for Electrical Systems shall be recognized as a technical expert and leader who has responsibility for guiding and driving research, innovation, strategy, and technology transfer to the business and external partners in the areas of not only individual component technologies in the core areas of power generation and conversion but also the application of those technologies as employed in the advancement of business applications and new capability development of Electrical Systems in the aerospace industry (both commercial and military). The ideal candidate is an established leader in their field for innovative and disruptive technologies that will have a major impact on the company. To be successful in the role, the SPE will be expected to collaborate across disciplines to address the business’ most complex technical issues, lead major technology programs, and drive technical execution across multiple projects and stakeholder groups. In addition, the SPE will serve as a key member of the Digital & Electrical Systems leadership team at GE Aerospace Research, aiding in both the development of technology roadmaps and assisting the Technology Director with the engagement of strategically aligned external pursuits.

Job Description

  • Drive roadmap, strategy, development, and execution of electrical system research with a focus on the transition of technologies from concept to products and/or services for GE internal and external clients.  This required both leading in new technology areas as well as partnering with other leaders in relevant component technologies.
  • Identify long-term technical challenges and specific growth opportunities in electrical systems and associated component technologies for current or future GE Aerospace business units and develop research objectives and action plans to address these opportunities.
  • Partner closely with team members spanning multiple technology domains within GE Aerospace Research and across the GE Aerospace business, including the global Digital & Electrical Systems, Materials & Manufacturing Technology, Aerothermal & Mechanical Systems Technology Disciplines, and associated technologists within GE Aerospace.
  • Lead major programs in key business units or with key government agencies such as DARPA, AFRL, and others.
  • Serve as a world class technical resource for the organization on complex issues.
  • Conceptualize, develop, and evaluate leading-edge applied research.
  • Lead technical reviews of key programs to ensure the right technical approach and quality are being delivered to our customers.
  • Take a strategic role in shaping the organization competencies and technical leadership in Electrical Systems and associated component technology areas and work closely with DES CTH peer group to coach and mentor teams for technical excellence.
  • Develop strong networks among GE Aerospace and external customers (including academia, government agencies/labs, and other partners) to build teams focused on maximizing outcomes and accelerating innovation.
  • Coordinate and host internal and external visitors; enable GE Aerospace Research multi-disciplinary teams to see the future through collaborative, external engagements.

Qualifications / Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Materials Science, or related fields.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience and demonstrable experience leveraging computational modeling techniques for the development of manufacturing processes.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience leading teams or projects.
  • Demonstrated deep domain knowledge in the areas of electrical systems as a whole and component technologies, preferentially to include, the application for electrification of flight and component technologies in power electronics and power conversion in a system context.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand customer needs and industry trends to guide strategy, make decisions, and communicate priorities.
  • Demonstrated reputation as a “convener” across multiple technical disciplines.
  • Experience leading large research teams and reporting out to executive-level leaders both internally and externally.
  • Proven success in guiding teams to develop novel breakthrough technologies.
  • Ability to make decisions with confidence when problems or solutions are not well-defined.
  • Demonstrated track-record of influencing and working with government funding agencies.
  • Demonstrated experience at identifying and capturing funding for innovative ideas across a broad network of external agencies.
  • Experience leading large government research programs and writing successful R&D proposals
