About the role

Description

The Department of Arabic at Middlebury College announces an opening for a three-year Visiting Assistant Professor position in Arabic beginning the Fall semester of 2026. Superior language proficiency in both Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and English is required, as is native or native-like proficiency in one Arabic dialect. The area of specialization for the position is open, but preference will be given to candidates whose specializations complement (rather than overlap with) the specializations of the Arabic department’s faculty.

The successful candidate will primarily teach MSA courses at all levels, from beginning to advanced levels, and possibly one course in English per academic year in their area of specialization in their second or third year of appointment. As part of a full teaching load, the candidate will also occasionally contribute to Middlebury’s First Year Seminar Program and Winter Term course offerings. Candidates must hold a PhD degree in their area of specialization by the start date of appointment. Candidates must have prior experience teaching MSA at the college level, preferably at a liberal arts college setting, and in accordance with the proficiency-based communicative approach to Arabic language pedagogy.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age or protected veteran status.

The deadline for submitting application materials is Nov 1, 2025. Applicants who plan to attend the Middle East Studies Association (MESA) Annual Meeting in Washington DC in November 2025 should make their availability known on the application letter.

Middlebury College uses Interfolio to collect all faculty job applications electronically. Email and paper applications will not be accepted. At Middlebury, we strive to make our campus a respectful, engaged community that embraces difference, and a full range of views and opinions, with all the complexity and individuality each person brings.  Through Interfolio, candidates should submit a letter of application addressed to members of the Arabic search committee. The letter should focus on the candidate’s pedagogical approach to teaching, their prior experience teaching Arabic to nonnative speakers at the college level, non-language courses that the candidate would be interested to teach, and the candidate’s research interests. In addition, the application must include (i) an updated curriculum vitae, (ii) unofficial graduate transcripts, (iii) at least two syllabi for two different Arabic language classes that the candidate previously taught, and (iv) at least one syllabus of a non-language class in English that the candidate either previously taught or would like to teach in the future. Candidates who make it to the preliminary interview stage will also be asked to arrange for three confidential and updated letters of recommendation, at least two of which must speak to teaching ability, to be submitted directly by the recommenders on Interfolio. Inquiries regarding this position should be directed to Dima Ayoub, Associate Professor of Arabic and Chair of the Arabic Department, at dayoub@middlebury.edu. Salary range: ($92,577 - $96,355)
