Sr. Software Engineer

The Sr. Software Engineer works in an Agile team in a multi-technology environment and contributes to the development, maintenance, and enhancement of business applications. Under the guidance of a Senior Software Engineer or Manager, collaborates with Business Analysts, key stakeholders, and other IT professionals to define technical specifications (based on business requirements) and system interfaces to develop and present business solutions. Software knowledge base will vary based on the applications being built.

Data Services IT is seeking a Sr. Software Engineer to focus on production support of ITIL services in Azure. The Sr. Software Engineer is responsible for the development and implementation of a support model for our Azure Cloud Data Warehouse environment as well as our on-premises Data Lake. The candidate will work with a team of software support staff, software developers, software engineers, business analysts, and test automation engineers to drive business value for our customers. Working with this team and collaborating with product owners, the candidate will help define operations support requirements and build solutions to meet those requirements. We want a candidate that is enthusiastic about engineering and solutioning with the enterprise in mind. The candidate should also embrace a technologically agnostic viewpoint and have a desire to develop a technological polyglot. Experience with Cloud technologies is desired especially Azure. The candidate should be focused on building sustainable solutions for the enterprise and be able to collaborate tightly with support, development, and dev/ops teams.

Job Responsibilities

• Undertakes complete operational support design of complex software applications or components applying agreed standards, patterns, and tools. Assists as part of a team in the design of components of larger software systems. Collaborates in reviews of work with others as appropriate.
• Provides operational support for our Azure Cloud based services and warehouse.  Guide junior developers in the support of these features.
• Operationalizes, codes, verifies, tests, documents, amends, and refactors moderately complex programs/scripts. Applies agreed standards and tools, to achieve a well-engineered result.
• Applies data analysis, design, modelling, and quality assurance techniques, based upon an understanding of business processes, to establish, support data structures and associated components (entity descriptions, relationship descriptions, attribute definitions). Advises database designers and other application development team members on the details of data structures and associated components from an operations perspective.
• Defines the software modules needed for an Operations team and support integrations and produces a support definition for software releases. Produces integration test specifications, conducts tests and records, and reports on outcomes. Diagnoses faults and records and reports on the results of tests. Produces system integration reports.
• Reviews requirements and specifications and defines test conditions of operational components. Designs test cases and test scripts under own direction, mapping back to pre-determined criteria, recording and reporting outcomes. Analyses and reports test activities and results. Identifies and reports issues and risks associated with own work.
• Identifies and resolves issues with the operational activities of applications incident, change and service management.
• Required to work late evening and weekends and be on-call rotation as needed.
• Occasional travel as needed.

Education

• Required - Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, other related field or equivalent work experience, including military experience

• Insurance certifications or affiliation with industry group a plus
• Microsoft Azure cloud certifications – Azure Fundamentals & Azure Data Engineering certifications a plus, other Azure certifications a plus

Work Experience

• Experience assembling solutions using custom development, off the shelf systems, and 3rd party integrations.
• 5+ years of experience with relational databases and SQL – MS SQL Server preferred
• 3+ years of experience with SSIS, Databricks, RDBMS, ADLS Gen2, Synapse, Data Factory or comparable ETL tools
• 3+ years of experience with Azure cloud-based applications.
• 3+ years of experience with cloud ETL processes such as Azure Data Factory
• 3+ years of experience with Python, PowerShell, Spark SQL and DataFrames.
