About the role

You find the mechanics of a Software as a Service business fascinating. You thrive at the intersection of Sales, Customer Success, Business Systems, Product, and Engineering. You could give an impromptu lecture on the pros and cons of various ways of pricing a cloud infrastructure security product, and why none of them are perfect. And while most of your colleagues see auditing entitlements of the entire customer base as a nightmare, you see it as an opportunity. Maybe you polish up the SQL skills you bust out from time to time, or fire up your favorite data analysis tool (there's no shame if that's Google Sheets). One way or another, you turn a morass of data into insight for the business.

Still reading? Great! This role isn’t for all PMs. Yes, you’ll do standard PM things – organize, communicate, and implement a roadmap, build relationships, and become the expert in how users use your areas of our product. In this role though, you’re less focused on end users and more focused on internal goals and customers. If you get your joy mostly from building product for external users, you’ll be frustrated. But if achieving business goals and making systems hum is your thing, and building phenomenal user experiences is just one of the ways you do it, you’ll thrive!

What Expel can do for you

  • Provide opportunities to have measurable impact on the company’s key business metrics right away.
  • Surround you with experienced, collegial colleagues in Business Systems, Revenue Ops, Pricing & Packaging, Technical Support, and Engineering who are all trying to make Expel’s operations scale 10x.
  • Give you a foundation you can build on. We’ve been working on this for years but know there’s a lot more we can do. In other words, you won’t be starting from scratch.

What you can do for Expel

  • Take ownership of our entitlements management, usage metrics, and customer provisioning and deprovisioning systems and their roadmap.
  • Contribute to running a cross-functional team (Product Management, UX, Engineering).
  • Build relationships with stakeholders and use their input to distill the many requests into a roadmap that achieves maximum impact.
  • Balance a PM’s responsibility for both short term and long term results.

What you should bring with you

  • A curious, tenacious, and discerning mentality.
  • Familiarity with software engineering processes, from work planning to coding to software deployment.
  • Familiarity with SaaS sales practices and operations (customer provisioning, usage measurement, pricing, customer support, etc.)
  • Broad knowledge of modern IT, such as public cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP), SaaS applications, Kubernetes, serverless, and autoscaling. You don’t have to know details, just what it is and how our customers generally use it.
  • Understanding of fundamental SaaS business metrics (Annual Recurring Revenue, Net Revenue Retention, Gross Margin, Net Sales Efficiency) and ways to influence each one.
  • Ability and inclination to do routine data analysis yourself (and the humility to know when to ask the experts on the data team for help).
  • Ability to build trust and empathy with individual contributors and leaders in sales, sales operations, business systems, customer success, and technical support.
  • 7+ years of professional experience, with significant exposure to product management (preferably that you’ve actually been a product manager before, but compelling stories are welcome).
