Summary
This position is accountable for establishing, maintaining, and improving site-based labor standards across Retail, Quick Service Restaurants (QSR), Full Service Restaurants (FSR), and Truck Service operations through hands-on time studies, work sampling, and predetermined time standard methodologies (MOST).
The Senior Industrial Engineer will lead labor standards development and process improvement initiatives that enhance productivity, labor utilization, and operational consistency while supporting a strong customer experience. This role develops and maintains standard operating procedures and operational best practices and supports rollout and training initiatives to ensure effective adoption at the site level.
This is an operations-focused, field-based Industrial Engineering role centered on real-world execution and observational studies in active operating environments.
Operational Scope
This role directly supports field operations across the following business areas:
- Retail / Convenience Store Operations
- Quick Service Restaurants (QSR)
- Full Service Restaurants (FSR)
- Truck Service & Maintenance Operations
- Labor standards developed in this role are used to support forecasting, scheduling, staffing guidance, and labor planning at the site level.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct hands-on MOST time studies, work sampling, and observational studies in active operating environments
- Develop, document, and maintain labor standards using predetermined motion time study techniques (MOST)
- Perform field observations and interviews to validate task execution and standard times
- Analyze and document workflows, task elements, and labor drivers across Retail, QSR, FSR, and Truck Service operations
- Translate time study results into actionable labor standards for scheduling and workforce planning systems
- Develop and maintain job- and task-level Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) aligned with labor standards
- Collaborate with subject matter experts, Operations, and Training teams to ensure standards reflect actual site execution
- Lead and facilitate continuous improvement initiatives using Lean Six Sigma methodologies (DMAIC, Value Stream Mapping)
- Support configuration requirements for labor standards and workflows related to scheduling systems
- Maintain working knowledge of Industrial Engineering and labor standards software platforms
- Provide analytical insights that improve efficiency, quality, and customer satisfaction
- Support rollout, training, and change management initiatives related to new or updated labor standards
- Ensure bp’s safety, risk, and compliance expectations are met, prioritizing safety in all aspects of the role
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering required
- Process Engineering or equivalent engineering degree may be considered with demonstrated time study experience
- 4–5 years of relevant Industrial Engineering experience
- Demonstrated experience conducting MOST time studies in operational environments
- Ability to independently plan, execute, analyze, and document MOST-based time studies
- Experience developing and maintaining labor standards for site-based operations
- Experience with labor standards or workforce management software preferred
- Lean Six Sigma certification preferred
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to retrieve, transform, analyze, and visualize data
- Data transformation experience using tools such as Excel (advanced formulas), SQL, BI tools, Python, R, or Alteryx
- Strong statistical skills (Minitab or similar statistical software is a plus)
- Proficient in MS PowerPoint with the ability to create professional, executive-ready presentations
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams
- Retail or multi-site operational experience is a plus
- Ability to travel independently and conduct on-site observations, time studies, and analyses as needed (up to 50% travel)
