The UHealth Laboratories Department in Kendall has an exciting opportunity for a Phlebotomist 2.
CORE JOB SUMMARY
The Phlebotomist 2 draws and collects blood samples from patients, verifies records, and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis. An employee in this position conducts interviews, takes vital signs, and tests blood samples. The Phlebotomist 2 relates to and interacts well with patients by taking into consideration their age-specific, physical, and psychosocial needs. The incumbent also uses the laboratory and hospital systems to accession data and perform other appropriate system functions.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Performs patient phlebotomy by prescribed technique outlined in the phlebotomy procedure manual.
2. Processes hematology and oncology patients as priority.
3. Works on pre-accession specimens and matches and organizes orders and labels for the day.
4. Follows patient identification process.
5. Answers questions and resolves problems pertaining to test requisitions, specimen requirements, test additions, priority changes, and patient results.
6. Maintains adequate inventory levels as per protocol and rotates previous stock.
7. Maintains required files and log systems in a neat and accurate manner.
8. Assists supervisor in recording statistics and generates reports.
9. Processes cancellations, credits, and additions of test procedures.
10. Picks up, unpacks, dates and stores in a timely manner according to manufacturers’ recommendation.
11. Checks packing slips, verifies amount of items received, documents, and gives copy to supervisor/designee.
12. Removes, empty boxes and recyclable material and disposes of them as per Standard Operating Procedures. Prepares biohazard containers for use and then disposal.
13. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent/relevant experience, certification or license
Experience:
Minimum 2 years of relevant experience required
Certification and Licensing:
- Phlebotomy
- HIV
- BLS by American Heart Association

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM
Department Specific Functions
- Performs specimen collection services in UHealth draw stations and assigned clinical areas, including venipuncture, urine collection support, and other specimen collection procedures according to established departmental protocols.
- Verifies patient identity using required patient identifiers before specimen collection and ensures all specimens are labeled accurately at the time of collection and in the presence of the patient.
- Releases, collects, and documents laboratory orders in UChart or other approved laboratory/hospital systems, ensuring accurate collection date, time, collector information, and order completion.
- Reviews requisitions, specimen labels, collection instructions, and test requirements to ensure specimens are collected in the correct container, properly labeled, and routed to the appropriate laboratory or reference laboratory.
- Prepares, packages, logs, and transports specimens according to departmental requirements, including STAT, routine, reference laboratory, and specialty testing workflows.
- Follows Blood Bank specimen collection requirements, including patient identification, bedside labeling, documentation of collection time, and prompt specimen delivery when applicable.
