Summer Nurse Extern, OR Support, Morristown Medical Center

JOB PURPOSE: 

Responsible for supporting the perioperative surgical team in providing high quality patient care. Assists with turnover of rooms, equipment cleaning and preparation of surgical suite for surgical procedures.  Provides our patients skilled and excellent care by maintaining a safe and clean environment, implementing best practice in task accomplishment.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. Cleans and sets up surgical equipment in OR suite between cases in an efficient manner utilizing the approved Infection Prevention cleaning guide and manufacturer’s IFU’s.  Maintains cleanliness and organization of equipment in storage areas as well.
2. Follows Policy and Procedures regarding specimen handling and blood product handling.
3. Utilizes surgical schedule and surgeon preference cards to prepare the Operating Room suite for each surgical procedure and notifies appropriate personnel of any potential issues or possible delays.
4. Labels and reports defective equipment promptly, completes appropriate paperwork and documents information in repair logbook for future reference.
5. Assist in lifting and transfer of patients under supervision utilizing proper transfer devices and body alignment.
6. Restocks supplies in assigned areas of the unit, reporting par deficits to materials manager.  Cleans and checks outdates before restocking
7. Maintains a safe environment by following unit and hospital-based policies and protocols.  Practices universal precautions properly handling hazardous waste, sharps, trash, contaminated linen, medication disposal and oxygen storage.
8. Seeks informal and formal opportunities for learning.  Completes mandatories and assigned competencies as required by their role.  Recognizes one’s own limitations and seeks appropriate resources as necessary.
9. Responds promptly to requests and emergency situations.  Communicates to charge nurse when unable to meet the needs of the unit.  Demonstrates a commitment to teamwork, fostering positive working relationships, especially in the preceptor role.  Demonstrates flexibility in meeting the needs of the unit, accepting assignments willingly.  Demonstrates independent task accomplishment as well.
10. Maintains patient and medical staff confidentiality, reporting compliance issues to appropriate personnel when in question.

 

Minimum Education:

• High School Diploma or GED required.

Minimum Experience:

• Prior acute care experience preferred.

Licenses/Certifications:

• BLS required.
• CNA preferred.
