Position Description:

The Theatre Arts and Performance Studies Department seeks applicants for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor of the Practice position, to teach two courses (one in Fall, one in Spring) in the TAPS Department, in addition to acting as Creative Producer for Brown’s MFA Program in Playwriting. In teaching, their Fall semester course will be determined based on department needs and their area of expertise; in the Spring they will co-teach the Graduate Playwriting workshop with program faculty. The successful applicant will also act as the Creative Producer for the MFA program’s annual Writing is Live festival and thesis productions, which features work by the current MFA students. In this capacity they will oversee and drive the formation of creative teams and casts (including graduate and undergraduate students, hired professional artists, and members of faculty and staff); meet regularly with staff and faculty to oversee festival planning, including scheduling, industry outreach, and organizing professional guests. They will also coordinate all other artistic and professionalizing programming for the MFA Playwriting program, build programming that connects the MFA playwriting program with other artistic organs and constituencies on campus, and mentor all MFA Playwriting students.  Brown University seeks to recruit and retain a diverse workforce to maintain the excellence of the University, and to offer our students richly varied disciplines, perspectives, viewpoints, and ways of knowing and learning.

 

Qualifications

Qualifications:

We seek applicants who are active professional theater artists with significant experience in university teaching, producing, experimental theater, and new play development. A BA is required, MFA preferred. Successful applicants will be familiar with a wide range of contemporary theater-making and a knowledge of theater history, and be able to offer meaningful professional and artistic guidance to MFA students with diverse backgrounds and artistic practices.

In the cover letter, please include a paragraph addressing your experience with, and commitment to, teaching and working in a diverse and inclusive environment. Applicants may be asked to provide additional documents at a later stage, such as samples of their artistic work, evidence of successful teaching, and course syllabi. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled, but best consideration will be given to materials submitted by January 31, 2025. Virtual interviews will be held in February/March 2024. This position begins July 1, 2025.
