Location
Superior Township, MIPurpose
- Leader of technical problem-solving activities across the Safety Test and Investigations Laboratories with a focus on identifying the root cause of safety defects. Lead cross functional teams of investigators, engineers, and scientists to solve complex and difficult manufacturing or design problems.
- Identify and support implementation of Preventive Actions associated with root causes of safety defects.
Major Responsibilities
- Lead problem-solving activities around safety defects investigations, such as technical communication with investigators, root-cause analysis, and proposal of effective solutions.
- Lead cross functional investigators and laboratory technical personnel to diligently apply a structured problem-solving methodology (such as Shainin, Six Sigma or equivalent).
- Coach and develop Problem Solver Practitioners.
- Maintain standards for root cause determination, analysis quality, and reporting.
- Lead preventive action implementation identification and implementation around safety defect root causes.
- Monitor efficacy of countermeasures proposed following root cause identification.
- Communicate effectively with Safety Office team members keeping team informed of status and progress of activities to support investigations.
- Exercise independent judgement to conduct field inspections of post-event vehicles or in-service vehicles at dealerships or alternate locations, if necessary.

Authority
- Position requires attaining and maintaining a high level of technical knowledge about Hyundai vehicles and automotive components to assist in identifying potential vehicle safety conditions. This position will have access to Hyundai expertise needed to complete investigations and a direct line to upper management to inform of critical issues identification.
- Evaluate and validate field action repairs related to recall campaigns on safety matters.
Liaise with Hyundai design, manufacturing, and supplier affiliates. - Manages and develops team members.
Education
~ Bachelor’s degree required.~ Master’s degree a plusRelated Experience
- Five or more years of relevant work experience.
- Experience directly related to automotive defects investigations including material and process analysis, product development failure modes analysis, manufacturability issues, and production qualification.
- Experience applying problem solving tools: Shainin Red X, Six Sigma, Failure Modes Effects Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, 8D, DMAIC, 5 Whys
- Experience in gathering and analyzing statistical data.
- Four or more years of experience in the automotive business, in areas such as, vehicle safety, design, testing, field reliability evaluation, materials engineering,diagnostic laboratory, or service is preferred.
- Automotive assembly plant or component manufacturing experience a plus.
- Previous supervisory experience desired.
Skills/Knowledge
- Results-driven with excellent project and program management skills.
- Ability to proactively collaborate with peers, vehicle component experts and leadership within the organization and creatively problem solve needed to complete investigations.
- Ability to concurrently manage a range of evaluations in a timely manner.
- Able to develop Dashboards in a data visualization tool (PowerBI,Tableau, similar) and to apply Data Science
- Ability to identify and utilize the corporation expertise related to the issue under investigation.
- Ability to accurately analyze high-volume technical data.
- Ability to present findings to others.
Certification
- Technical problem-solving certification (Shainin Journeyman or Six Sigma Black Belt).
